🐝 Lively yellow jacket nest today!

Ever notice wasps flying in and out of the same little hole? 👀 There’s a good chance you’ve found a yellow jacket nest.

FUN FACT: they don’t usually dig deep nests from scratch. Instead, they love taking over old rodent burrows or other underground cavities. The entrance may just be a small hole, but the nest itself can extend 1–3 feet below the surface, and sometimes even deeper if they’re using an existing tunnel!!

By late summer, a single nest can house thousands of yellow jackets, which is why you’ll often see a steady stream of them coming and going!

If you spot one in your yard, it’s best to admire it from a distance—they’re much more defensive when you’re near their home! 🐝
