How Mice Are Getting Into Your House Through the Vents

Most people check the obvious spots and still end up with mice. One of the most overlooked entry points is your exhaust vents, including your dryer vent.

How To Actually Keep Mice From Coming Back

Getting rid of mice is only half the job. If you want them gone for good, there are two steps involved, and the order actually matters.

Step one is elimination, clearing out the mice that are already inside the home through bait boxes or trapping.

Step two is exclusion, which means sealing up every hole, gap, and crack mice could use to get back in.

The Difference Between A Cheap Fix And A Real Fix For Mice

Quarter inch hardware cloth, bent into a U shape and pressed between the siding and the foundation, is a common way companies try to keep mice out. It is inexpensive and it lets trapped water drain, so it sounds like a reasonable solution on paper.

What most homeowners do not know is that mice can chew straight through hardware cloth, and they can pull it right back out once it is in place. We have seen it happen in the field more than once.

That is exactly why we use excluder mesh instead. It has stainless steel built into it, which actually stops mice from chewing their way back through and getting back inside.

How Small of a Gap a Mouse Really Needs

Grab a pencil and try this at your doors. If it fits underneath, a mouse can get in.

Mice can fit through gaps about a quarter inch wide, and if their head fits, their whole body fits. The usual spots are under garage and entry doors, and where pipes and wires come into the house.

Once mice find a gap, they tend to come back, so seal it for good.

5 signs bed bugs are in your home, and where to look for each one.

1. Rust colored stains on your sheets. Blood spots left behind from a crushed bed bug overnight.

2. Tiny dark spots along seams. F***l residue clusters right where they hide during the day.

3. Bite marks in a line or cluster. Showing up somewhere that was not itchy the night before.

4. A faint sweet, musty smell. The odor gets stronger as the number of bugs grows.

5. Tiny shells tucked into seams. Bed bugs molt several times and leave the evidence behind.

The Tiny Water Spots That Breed Mosquitoes

You do not need a pond in your yard to have a mosquito problem. A bottle cap of water can hatch them.

Mosquitoes only need a small amount of water to lay eggs, and those eggs stick to container walls and can survive winter. Once the weather warms up, an egg can become a biting adult in about 7 to 10 days.

Make it a habit to dump standing water weekly. Check your gutters, plant saucers, birdbaths, and buckets.

What Actually Works Better Than Cheese for Mice

Turns out mice do not actually love cheese. That idea comes from cartoons, and strong smelling cheese can even put them off.

If you are setting traps, peanut butter, chocolate, or a bit of beef stick work better. Smear a small dab into the trigger so the mouse stays at the trap longer.

Set several traps while you are at it. One mouse rarely means just one.
