Best Mousetrap Ever? We Disagree

Reacting to another trap video, and this one is mostly a sales pitch dressed up as advice.

The video shows a big catch, a trap marketed as bigger than everything else on the market, reach it in, pull it out. We actually like that mechanism, we use traps like that ourselves.

What we do not love is the big yellow attachment on it, which seems unnecessary, and calling it the absolute best mousetrap ever is a stretch.

The real point here is that mice are smart. No single trap solves an infestation on its own. It takes a full system, different trap types, placed in different spots, working together.

It really is a cat and mouse game. Do you already run a mix of trap types, or just one?

Is The Trap Board Overkill?

Rating another mouse trap video, this one had three tips, and we did not agree on all of them.

Tip one, use bait with some texture to it. If you are using peanut butter, go chunky, so the mouse actually has to work it while it is on the trigger.

Tip two, place traps perpendicular to the wall, since mice run along edges, which increases your odds of connecting with them.

Tip three, if you have one mouse, you probably have more, so screw three traps to a board and set the whole thing against the wall.

We liked most of it, but the board is a bit much. Most regular people are not mounting three or four traps to a board and monitoring it like a project.

On the peanut butter, good choice, but it depends on what the mice are already eating.

Scores were split, one of us said eight out of ten, the other said seven point five.

That water sitting in there is completely stagnant, which means mosquitoes will absolutely lay their larva in it to breed.

Rodent Exclusion Done Right With Xcluder

Setting traps without closing the openings mice are using just means new mice find the same gap next week. Today our team was out doing rodent exclusion, which means finding every entry point around a home and permanently sealing it instead of only treating the symptom.

In these photos you can see two of the most commonly overlooked entry points. A foundation vent with a gap wide enough for a mouse to squeeze through, and a dryer vent with a loose or missing guard. Mice only need an opening about the width of a dime to get inside, so gaps like these get used again and again if nobody closes them.

We use Xcluder material for this because it is built specifically to stop rodents rather than just discourage them for a while. It has a stainless steel core mice cannot chew through, unlike foam or plain steel wool that eventually gets worked loose or breaks down.

This Trap Uses Mosquitoes Against Themselves

Rating another mosquito trap video, and this one has a clever mechanism behind it.

The setup is simple, fill a bucket with water to attract mosquitoes so they breed and lay eggs in it. Inside sits a mesh band with powder and tablets that introduce larvicide and fungus into the water. Mosquitoes then carry that fungus out to other breeding spots before dying within nine days.

We like this approach, it is genuinely part of the solution.

One issue with the yard shown in the video, there is way too much vegetation and lattice work around that deck, which is prime nesting habitat.

This trap alone will not solve the whole problem, but it is a great addition alongside regular mosquito spraying.

The one real complaint is the lack of security, no lock or key to keep it closed.

Our score, seven out of ten, docked purely for the design.

This Bucket Traps Mosquito Eggs

This is called the mosquito bucket, and it works by giving mosquitoes exactly what they are looking for.

Fill it about halfway with water and let it sit until it goes stagnant. Add in some foliage, tree or plant material, a bit of grass, and a couple of leaves.

Then grab a mosquito dunk, it looks like a donut. For a bucket this size, break it apart, then break it apart again, and drop just a quarter piece into the water.

Set the bucket in a nice shady spot, somewhere mosquitoes are actually likely to be hanging around.

Inside Layer, T Rex Trap Setup

Bait boxes on the outside are only one layer of protection against mice and rats. Once they are already inside the walls, the fight looks different.

T Rex traps are built for that inside work. Mice and rats travel along wood studs, electrical lines, and pipes, so these traps have small holes on both sides where a zip tie threads through, letting you attach the trap directly onto a pipe or stud right in their path. Once they hit the bait, that is it.

These traps are strong enough that an accidental touch left a finger black and blue for a full week. Not something to try, but it says a lot about how well it works.

Best Mouse Trap For Your Situation

The mouse trap you should use actually depends on where the mice are getting around, not just which one is on the shelf.

A tin cat is a live trap. Mice go inside and stay there, and a glue strip inside can hold them too. It gets set against the interior walls.

A T Rex trap is built for hard to reach areas, electrical cords, pipes, wood, the attic. Secure it with a zip tie, bait the middle, and it works fast once they hit it.

Clearing a mouse or rat problem almost always takes more than one trap type working together.

Treat It or Inspect It? Know The Difference

Some pest problems get treated right away, others need an inspection before you do anything else.

Ants across the kitchen counter, treat it.

Spiders in every corner of the basement, treat it.

Small brown pellets on the windowsill, that could be termite frass, inspect it.

Mud tubes running up the foundation, that could be termites, inspect it.

A house built in the seventies that has never had a termite inspection should get one regardless of what you are currently seeing.

If you are seeing pellets or mud tubes, get a termite inspection scheduled before it turns into a bigger repair.

What are mice actually looking for when they get into a house? Knowing the answer is the first step to keeping them out.

They want three things. The warmth of your home, food, and sometimes water, which can come from something as small as a leaky pipe.

To reach it, they barely need an opening at all, just something about the size of a pinky finger. That gap could be under your garage door, in a vent, or through your dryer vent, and there are more spots like that than most homeowners ever check.
