Ever looked at a copper pot, brass handle, or metal fixture and wondered how it got so dull, dark, and cloudy?
That cloudy film isn’t just dirt; it’s oxidation. Over time, metal reacts with oxygen in the air to form copper oxide. While you could buy a jar of harsh chemical polish that smells like a factory, the secret to restoring that shine is already sitting inside your refrigerator door: Ketchup.
It sounds wild, but the chemistry is completely solid. Ketchup contains natural acetic acid (from vinegar) mixed with citric acid from tomatoes. When you dab ketchup onto tarnished copper or brass, that mild acid reacts directly with the copper oxide, breaking it down and dissolving it without scratching the metal underneath. The thick consistency of the ketchup is key here: it keeps the acid clinging directly to the surface instead of running off into your sink.
Here is how to do it safely:
1. Dab a thin, even layer of ketchup onto the tarnished metal area.
2. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes (no need to rub or scrub violently).
3. Rinse it thoroughly with warm water, wash with a drop of dish soap, and buff it completely dry with a soft microfiber cloth.
NOTE: Stick to solid copper, genuine brass, or stainless steel! Avoid using acid-based hacks on plated metals, painted finishes, or delicate antiques where thin coatings could wear down.
