I usually start telling homeowners to pay closer attention to rodent signs around the house once October arrives.

Here in the Greater Charlotte area, cooler nights can start pushing mice and rats toward garages, crawl spaces, attics, and other protected areas.

Most problems don't begin with someone actually seeing a mouse. It might be scratching at night, a few droppings behind something in the garage, or signs that a bag of pet food has been disturbed.

Those small clues are worth paying attention to because rodents may already be finding their way inside.

I recently handled a rodent job that started with scratching near the kitchen and a few droppings in the garage.

When I inspect a home for termites, I'm not only looking at the spot where the homeowner first noticed something.

I want to know where the termites are coming from, where they've been active, and what conditions around the property may be helping them.

Here in the Greater Charlotte area, that usually means checking the foundation, crawl space, garage, accessible wood, moisture-prone areas, and places where wood or mulch sits close to the structure.

Once I know what's happening, the treatment can be focused on the active areas while also protecting the home against continued termite movement from the soil.

That's important because removing a mud tube or treating one visible spot doesn't necessarily mean the termite activity has stopped.

If you're checking your home for termites, I usually recommend starting around the foundation and working your way around slowly.

Look for mud tubes along concrete or brick, wood that looks damaged or feels unusually soft, and discarded wings around windows, doors, or the garage.

Outside, keep an eye on moisture too. Clogged gutters, poor drainage, and downspouts that leave the ground wet beside the house can create conditions termites prefer.

I also recommend keeping firewood and scrap lumber away from the home and pulling heavy mulch back so you can actually see the foundation.

These checks don't replace a termite inspection, but they can help you notice something unusual earlier.

Sometimes the first clue is nothing more than a thin mud tube along the foundation or a few discarded wings near a window. Those signs may look small, but they're worth checking because termites can already be active elsewhere in the structure.

When I'm dealing with spider activity, I'm usually paying just as much attention to the insects as I am to the spiders.

Spiders settle where they can easily find food, so I spend time looking at outdoor lighting, landscaping, garages, porches, storage areas, and other places where insects gather.

Here in the Greater Charlotte area, I also check exterior corners, window frames, eaves, and entry points where spiders commonly build webs without being disturbed.
That part matters.

If you only remove the webs but leave the conditions the same, new spiders often move right back into those areas.

The best long-term results usually come from reducing both the spider activity and the things that attract them in the first place.

If you're starting to notice more spiders around your home, the first thing I recommend is paying attention to where the webs keep showing up.

If you're removing webs from the same corner every few days, there's usually a reason that area keeps attracting spiders.

Take a look around your home for overgrown shrubs touching the house, clutter in the garage, or outdoor lights that stay on all night and attract insects.

Those simple things can make a property much more appealing to spiders than most people realize.

I usually start getting more calls about spiders around the Greater Charlotte area during August.

Most homeowners are not worried because they only see a spider here and there.

What usually gets their attention is finding fresh webs around the garage, porch, or patio every few days.

Those webs are often a sign that spiders have found a good place to stay.

Around this time of year, insects are still very active, and spiders tend to settle wherever they have a steady food source and quiet places to hide.

I recently helped a homeowner whose spider problem started exactly that way.
