- White vinegar is a great substitute for fabric softener. It is good for the environment and septic tanks and there is no evidence showing that it damages washing machines. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which helps to soften, brighten, and eliminate odors in your laundry, and it doesn’t contain harsh chemicals.
- Vinegar is an odd choice for a fabric softener because of its strong smell but guess what?! There’s no vinegar smell left behind once the laundry goes through the rinse cycle.
- And good news! If you like your clothes to smell delicious, you can easily add a natural fragrance to this natural fabric softener with your favorite essential oils. Simply add 40 drops of essential oils to one gallon of white vinegar.
How to use it:
- Add half a cup of white vinegar to the laundry in your washing machine before the final rinse cycle.
OR
- Add half a cup of white vinegar to your washing machine’s fabric softener dispenser before you start your laundry load. It will automatically dispense at the right time in the cycle.
Keep in mind: Use white vinegar because dark-colored vinegars may stain laundry.
Now you know a natural fabric softener which can save you up to $10/gallon.
