We know it can be exciting when your little one grows โ€” and tempting to move them into a โ€œbig kidโ€ high backed booster seat. But did you know that children under the age of 5 are not yet ready for this stage of travel?

Hereโ€™s why we recommend keeping children in a 5-point harness for as long as possible โ€” and not transitioning to a high backed booster until at least age 5 (and often older):

๐Ÿ‘ถ ๐—•๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜† ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜† ๐— ๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€:
Young children donโ€™t yet have the muscle tone or impulse control needed to sit safely in a booster seat for the whole journey. They may slump, lean forward, or reach for things โ€” all of which can put them at serious risk in a crash.

Harnessed seats spread crash forces across the strongest parts of a childโ€™s body โ€” shoulders and hips โ€” while keeping them firmly in place.

Even if your child technically meets the size minimum for a booster, that doesnโ€™t mean theyโ€™re ready developmentally. Maturity is just as important!

At Simply Safe Car Seats, we recommend keeping your child in a rear or forward-facing harnessed seat until at least age 5 โ€” and often beyond โ€” depending on their size and readiness.

Have you heard of Roth ID tags? Theyโ€™re a simple but potentially life-saving addition to your childโ€™s car seat that every parent should know about.

These information tags can be affixed to any car seat or product used by an infant, young child, or person under the care of a parent or guardian. In the event of an emergency, the tag pulls from the car seat and becomes an emergency identification wristband. Think of it like a will - you donโ€™t want to need it and you hope you never will, but having it in place can make all the difference if something happens.

First responders can scan the QR code on the wristband to access immediate emergency information and see if thereโ€™s an online profile with additional patient information. This digital component means even more detailed information can be accessed instantly. Medical conditions, allergies, medications, or other critical details that could save precious time in an emergency.

Immediate family notification: First responders know exactly who to call

Quick response time: Your loved ones can get to you faster

Peace of mind: One less thing to worry about as a parent

Medical information: Can include allergies or medical conditions

In those critical first moments after an accident, every second counts. Rather than searching through phones or wallets, first responders have immediate access to your emergency contacts and can notify family members right away so they can come quickly.

Itโ€™s one of those simple safety measures that takes just minutes to set up but could make an enormous difference when it matters most.

โ€œWhy canโ€™t you do more than 3 seats at a time?โ€

Well! I will only do 3 seats in one night for families with multiple children. Otherwise, I can actually only do 2 a day! This is for a few reasons.

The first being that I just donโ€™t have the space in my vehicle to transport more than 3 safely as I have a child in her own car seat! As you can see in this photo, 2 takes up my trunk space. I have 1 extra seat in the back. Unfortunately, my middle seat doesnโ€™t allow space for another car seat and I will not place any on my front seat.

The second being 3 seats runs the risk of drying times needing to be longer. I cannot reassemble a car seat until it is completely dry. Keeping the maximum of 3 for a single allows for more effective communication and planning if there were to be a need for additional drying time.

The last being that there is far less confusion when only accepting 2 car seats from different families (1 each). Each car seat is cleaned completely separated from each other, but it leaves me no room for mistakes and rushing. Something we simply do not want and cannot have when it concerns the safety of our children.

I do also provide stroller and wagon cleanings which are fairly simple to plan for and transport! If you happen to have multiple, just send me a message and we will plan something that works for you and your kiddos.

Message me if youโ€™ve been dreading taking on the task of cleaning car seats! Iโ€™ll be happy to shorten your already busy to-do list!

CAR SEAT SAFETY CHECK
aka the stuff that could literally save your childโ€™s life.

If youโ€™re buckling them in like itโ€™s โ€œclose enoughโ€โ€ฆ stop. Read this.

Hereโ€™s what SAFE actually means:
Straps flat, tight, and untwisted, no room for slack, no excuses. If you can pinch the harness at the collarbone? Itโ€™s too loose.

Chest clip at armpit level, not the belly button. Not the neck. Armpit.

The base? Shouldnโ€™t move more than 1 inch side to side or front to back. If it does, itโ€™s not secure enough. Tighten it down like your kidโ€™s life depends on it, because it does.

Rear facing is the safest position. Period.

โ€œBut theyโ€™re tall.โ€

Good news! Their legs being criss cross applesauce is still a thousand times safer than forward facing too soon.

Remember:
Their neck bones arenโ€™t ready to take crash forces forward. Rear facing distributes that force and protects their spine, neck, and brain.

Let Grandma roll her eyes.
Let the strangers make comments.
Your childโ€™s safety is more important than anyoneโ€™s opinion.

Because โ€œgood enoughโ€ isnโ€™t safe enough.

๐ŸšจPSA ๐Ÿšจ THIS IS NOT A PROPER CLEANING METHOD!!

All parents need to refer to their car seat manual for cleaning instructions.

Things to note:
1. A steam cleaner like this can compromise the fabric, whether that be the flame retardant or the fibers of it.
2. If you are doing a full clean, the covers MUST be removed and dried by hang drying or minimal dryer use if allowed followed by hang drying.
3. This cleaning method CAN cause mold and mildew to grow.
4. The excessive strap soaking can compromise the tensile strength and stretch which is specifically designed to protect your child in an accident.
5. Wetting the styrofoam will compromise its ability to absorb impact, along with the potential for mold growth.

If you have any cleaning questions, please donโ€™t hesitate to ask! Whether that be booking online for a professional cleaning or needing help cleaning on your own, thereโ€™s no shame in asking so we can do things properly to protect our little ones.
