βοΈβ² Preparing Your Floating Fountain for Freezing Temperatures β²βοΈ
As temperatures drop below freezing, one of the most common questions we receive is:
βWhat should we do with our floating fountain?β
Hereβs what you need to know π
π‘οΈ Short Freezes (Freezing at Night, Warming During the Day):
If nighttime temperatures drop below freezing but daytime temperatures rise above freezing, no action is required. Your fountain can continue operating under its current settings.
π§ Extended Freezes (Hard Freezes):
When temperatures remain below freezing for multiple days, this is considered a hard freeze. While not common, hard freezes do occur in North Texas.
In the event of an unexpected hard freeze, itβs not always feasible for service providers to immediately adjust timers or shut down every fountain they maintain. In these situations, pond owners have two safe options:
Option 1: Keep the Fountain Running 24/7
β’ If your fountain already runs continuously, leave it on
β’ If itβs on a timer, switch it to 24/7 operation during the freeze
β’ Continuous movement prevents ice from forming around the motor and propeller
β’ Ice may form around the float, but this will not damage internal components as long as the fountain stays running
Option 2: Turn the Fountain Off Completely
β’ Turn the fountain off for the duration of the hard freeze
β’ The fountain will safely float among the ice
β’ Restart once the ice has fully melted
β οΈ Important Warning:
Do NOT leave a fountain on a timer during freezing conditions.
If it shuts off overnight, ice can form around the motor, preventing it from restarting and potentially causing damage.
π‘ The Best Long-Term Winter Solution:
For year-round fountain operation, pairing your fountain with a bottom diffused aeration system can help:
β’ Reduce ice formation around the fountain
β’ Improve circulation and oxygen levels
β’ Support overall water quality during winter months
π¨ What If Ice Forms and the Fountain Wonβt Start?
β’ Built-in overload protection will shut the unit down to prevent damage
β’ Repeated shutdowns can strain the motor
β’ A manual reset may be required before restarting
If this happens, a service call may be needed β and weβre happy to help.
