Yeah, we see your complaints. Houston, love bug season is here — and we’ve got answers.
Before you call us to get rid of them — here’s what our experts want you to know:
First, they’re not actually bugs. Lovebugs aren’t bugs at all — they’re flies, more closely related to mosquitoes and gnats. Consider your mind officially blown.
Second, they won’t hurt you. Lovebugs do not bite or sting. They’re annoying, they’re everywhere, and they have zero personal space — but they are completely harmless to you, your kids, and your pets.
Third, they’re actually kind of important. Lovebug larvae break down decaying plant material in the soil, returning nutrients back to the earth. They’re nature’s cleanup crew (just with terrible timing and no sense of boundaries.)
So why are there SO many right now? Lovebugs appear twice a year — once from April to May and again from August to September — each emergence lasting about four weeks. That’s just the season. It ends. We promise.
What about my car? Lovebugs are attracted to engine exhaust and heat. They’re not targeting you personally; Your car is just warm. Rinse them off sooner rather than later though, especially in this heat.
The one thing love bugs ARE guilty of? Being absolutely everywhere for a month straight. Twice a year. On your windshield, your front door, your coffee…EVERYWHERE.
Hang tight, Houston. They’ll be gone before you know it.
