I can tell who got the worst contractor on Instagram just by driving past their house. It’s a weird skill nobody asks for. I’m not even trying to inspect your roof, I’m just driving to my next job and my eyes lock onto flashing that’s already failing, patch jobs I know are leaking, fans so low quality they’re not pulling a fraction of the heat they should. Half the time the ventilation is placed in the wrong spot entirely, which just creates more damage instead of preventing it. And adding two fans doesn’t mean you’re pulling more air, if they’re too close together they actually fight each other and cancel out.

And what’s even crazier, most of the time you only need one fan, because it’s based on square footage, not vibes. But the rebuttal I get is that the previous guy suggested two to get more out of it. So somehow the client equates more money with better quality work. But hey, what do I know, right?

I see it constantly. The wild part is those same homeowners never found me or anyone who actually knows what they’re looking at before they handed their money over. It’s incredible how common bad work is once you know what to look for.

Attic Ugg climb into attic other day, same as always. Attic hot like inside of mammoth stew pot. Attic Ugg sweat through whole shirt in five minutes, come out looking like lost a fight with a waterfall. But this heat no joke. All summer, attic been slow-cooking roof from underneath like rotisserie nobody asked for. Shingles curl. Wood go soft. By time storm roll in, roof already tired, already weak, just waiting for excuse to fail.

Then wind show up. Rain show up. And roof that “looked fine” in June suddenly performing interpretive dance across neighbor’s lawn.

Attic Ugg see this every single year. Same story. Homeowner shocked. Attic Ugg… not shocked. Attic Ugg been saying it since spring.

Moral of cave: don’t wait for storm to tell you what heat already whispered all summer. Fix breathing roof BEFORE sky get dramatic, not after Attic Ugg pulling shingles out of your gutters.

Attic Ugg learn fast: modern roof need ridge vent same way cave need smoke hole. Hot air rise, hot air need escape at top, or hot air just sit there and slow-cook everything above it. Shingles curl. Wood warp. Whole roof age like Attic Ugg after too many mammoth hunts, except roof only 8 years old, not 40.

Attic Ugg see many house where roofer before Attic Ugg not understand this. Roofer slap shingles on top, never think about breathing, roof look shiny for photo, then die young from inside while homeowner confused why AC bill look like ransom note.

Attic Ugg not smart in books. Attic Ugg smart in attic. And attic tell no lies. Roof that breathe live long. Roof that suffocate, die early, no matter how nice shingles look on top.

Hot air trap in attic all day. Then wet air join party at night. Water forms on wood , like soda can sweating in summer.

Wood get wet. Wood dry out. Wood get wet again. Over and over, all year.

That’s how roofer see it: nails rust early. Decking go soft. Shingles curl from below, not above. By time you see leak, wood already been rotting for years.

Most roofers fix the leak. Few fix the why. The why is up in that attic, not on the shingles.

Everybody watches the shingles. Nobody watches what’s underneath them. And that’s exactly where your roof actually dies.

Here’s the part most homeowners never hear. Your upstairs runs hot, your bills keep climbing, your roof starts looking older than it should, and you blame the sun, the AC, or the age of the house. None of those are the real problem. The real problem is the air trapped in an attic that can’t breathe.

In the summer, a sealed attic hits 150°F. That heat has nowhere to go, so it cooks your shingles from the underside. The asphalt dries out, the granules let go, the edges curl, and your roof ages years in a single season.

In the winter, it flips. Warm, damp air rises into the cold attic and condenses on the wood, like sweat on a glass. That moisture soaks into the decking your shingles are nailed to. Now you’ve got mold, soft wood, and rusting nails.

And that’s the part that costs you. Your shingles are only as good as the wood they’re nailed into. Rot that wood and nothing holds. Most shingle warranties are actually voided without proper ventilation, so the manufacturer already knows this. A roof built to last 30 years can fail in 12.
The fix isn’t complicated. Balance. Cool air in through the soffits, hot and moist air out through the ridge or a solar attic fan. A roof that can breathe stays dry, stays cool, and lasts the years you actually paid for.

Your roof’s real lifespan is decided in the attic, in a space nobody ever looks. That’s exactly where I look first.

I turned my entire career into a video game. Not clickbait. You’ve watched me do this for years, now it’s your turn, literally.

For the last two months I’ve been building something I’ve wanted to make for years.

Every attic I’ve crawled through. Every question you’ve ever dropped in my comments. Every ventilation calc, duct check, and solar fan install I’ve done on real jobs. I put it all into a game.

I spend a lot of time making invisible things visible.

Attic Papi joined me for a full day of diagnostic testing—blower door, duct leakage testing, fog, thermal imaging, pressure measurements, and a lot of crawling around trying to understand how the house is actually behaving.

The equipment matters. But the number on the screen isn’t really the point.

The goal is to connect the measurements to the house.

Where is air actually moving?
Where is it coming from?
What pathways are connecting the attic, wall cavities, duct system and living space?
And which of those things actually matter enough to fix?

Then we use photos, video, fog and measurements so the homeowner can see what we’re seeing.

Not every hole is a problem.
Not every air leak has the same consequence.
And one test rarely tells the whole story.

Test. Observe. Document. Explain. Then decide what should be fixed.

If I was a caveman, this is how I’d explain a blower door test.

You breathe house air all day. All night. You think it clean. It not.

House got holes. Sneaky holes. And through those holes come bad stuff. Dust. Attic funk. Bug p**p. Mold spore. Hot dirty air from the nasty attic fall down into your rooms. You suck it into your lungs. Your kid suck it. Your dog suck it.

Blower door test find where the bad air sneak in.

Here how work. Man put big fan in your door. Fan suck air OUT of house. Now outside air push in through every crack, every gap, every dumb hole. Man walk around with smoke stick. Watch the smoke bend. “Ah-ha. Bad air come from here. And here. And this hole by the attic hatch, this one bring you the worst funk.”

Now you KNOW. Now you seal. Now the nasty attic air stay in attic where it belong. Fresh air stay fresh. Lungs happy. Kid breathe clean. House feel good.

And bonus. When you seal the holes, AC stop working so hard. Bill go down too. Nice. But that just gravy.

The real win? You stop breathing garbage.

Fix holes. Seal cracks. Breathe clean.
