Trash is an everyday part of our life, from the trash cans in our homes, to the litter on our streets and in storm drains and the landfills in our communities. Being aware of our ʻōpala (trash) is an important part of environmental stewardship and that awareness starts with education.

That’s why we’ve made it easy for local educators and families to bring lessons on storm water and trash reduction into classrooms and homes. Read our blog to learn about the educational resources that can help students explore how everyday actions affect our storm drains, streams, and ocean, while building skills in research, problem-solving, and environmental stewardship.

Today’s sustainable habit: Keep your vehicle tires inflated 🛞

Improperly inflated tires can increase gas consumption and carbon emissions, and accelerate tire wear, which creates harmful plastic particles called “microplastics” that collect on roadways. When the next rain rolls in, it sweeps all microplastics off the road, down the storm drains, and straight into our ocean. Summer in Hawaiʻi means more time outside, from beach days and hikes to afternoons in the backyard or at the park. It is also a good time to talk to kids about how everyday choices help protect our islands from litter and pollution.

Plastic waste is one of the most common types of debris found in our environment. When plastic bottles, caps, bags, and wrappers are not properly disposed of, they often wash into storm drains, streams, and the ocean, where they harm marine life and add to pollution.
