Is Your “Roof Leak” Actually a Roof Leak?

Yesterday I got a call from a client worried about their roof leaking. We’d just completed their roof in July, so naturally they were concerned.
When I got there, I discovered something important: their roof wasn’t leaking at all.
Here’s what was actually happening. Due to the cold weather, their home was losing massive amounts of heat into the attic. That heat was turning into frost on the underside of the roof deck. Then, when the afternoon sun warmed things up, all that frost melted and dripped onto their ceiling, looking exactly like a roof leak.
This is a sign of inadequate attic insulation, and it’s more common than you might think, especially during cold snaps like we’ve been having.
If you’re seeing water stains on your ceiling, ice dams on your roof edge, or noticing your heating bills creeping up, you might be dealing with the same issue.

In October we wrapped up our year with one of our favorite projects of the season — restoring the roof on an old BN Railroad train depot. 🚂🏠

The building isn’t used as a depot anymore, but it still carries decades of history… and unfortunately, a roof that was actively leaking.

Apex Xteriors stepped in and brought it back to life with brand-new Malarkey Vista Class 4 shingles — built to withstand the toughest Wisconsin storms and protect this piece of local history for years to come.
