Pros and Cons about Salt/Chlorine Generated Pools.
Pros: Water feels good, because salt softens the water. - You never have to add chlorine tablets or shock to your pool, because it is making that for you. - I cannot think of any other way it is beneficial to own a Chlorine Generated system. I have rarely found a customers pool with a chlorine generator that was being run properly. I usually found very high or extremely high levels of chlorine. Way above the recommended safety levels by the Chlorine institute or EPA.
Cons: The system is very expensive - You have to add a lot of salt to your pool water, also expensive - You have to maintain a certain level all season long by adding more salt periodically through out the summer - Salt is very corrosive - It will corrode everything around it like the concrete decking, metal furniture, auto cover parts, and any metal in or around the pool, especially above ground pool walls or rails and pool heaters. - It constantly raises the Ph in the pool, which has to be treated at least every other day to keep the water in balance. - You still need to buy and install products to balance your pool water to make sure the chlorine it makes is effective. - A salt generated system has a lot of electrical and mechanical parts that need to be serviced and replaced when they go bad. This is time consuming and very expensive. - You still should buy products like natural enzymes, that you add weekly to help breakdown the oils and solids that get in the pool and clog up your filters. You should still buy mineral packs like pool rx or the frog mineral pack. These natural minerals last all summer and winter and work to kill bacteria and viruses naturally, so you can reduce the level of chlorine and shock you use in your pool. - Reduces the life of your liner. -
As you can tell by now, I am not a big fan of salt/chlorine generated systems. While they can work to sanitize you water, If ran properly, I think the cons out weigh the pros. There are products that do the same thing that are less expensive to use and provide a lot safer and healthier environment for your kids.
What do I recommend. I have found, what I feel, over the past 40 years, are the best ways to keep pool water sanitized, clear and provide the safest water for our kids to swim in. No. 1 - Pool Tiger.
Here is a link to watch a video on why and how it works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVkRq17IeBw&t=1s It last forever. No mechanical parts to ever buy or replace. It cost 1,150 installed. At least 25% less than the total cost of a chlorine generated system. 30 day money back guarantee if you are not satisfied. 100% safe. I still recommend you purchase the frog mineral pack yearly and use some non chlorine shock weekly to remove the dead particles out of the water. I also like using a natural enzyme weekly to aid in the removal of oils and scum.
No. 2 - EZ Pool. Here is a link to watch a video on this product.

This is a powder that is added to your pool once a week. It is like a whole pool store in one bucket. It uses a non chlorine shock. I like using only one to two chlorine tabs a week with it depending on the size of you pool. So this reduces your chlorine use by 90%. It is all natural and completely safe for your kids. By adding the Frog mineral system with it you can cut down the amount of EZ Pool required for you r size pool by 50%. This saves a lot of money in the long run. Feel free to come by our store in Henderson or call me, Jack, at 270-844-3445 if you have any questions about either product. I have had a lot of customers use both products for a long time and no one has ever asked for their money back. Both are very safe and healthy and a great alternative to chlorine or salt/chlorine generated pools.
