Several customers have asked if the deep freeze we had this winter wiped out the ticks for the year. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that’s not how ticks work.

The heavy snow we’ve been plowing actually acts like a giant insulation blanket for those tough little buggers. They are just hanging out in the leaf litter under the snow, perfectly warm and waiting for a thaw.

A few things to keep in mind before you head out to the woodlot:

The "Snow Blanket": It stays way warmer under a foot of snow than it does in the wind. They aren't freezing; they're napping.

The 40-Degree Rule: If the sun comes out and it hits 40°F, they wake up. I pulled a tick off our dog (Mosby) last week after a walk around Pierce Cedar Creek—don't let the calendar fool you.

They basically have "antifreeze" in their blood. A Michigan winter is just a Tuesday to them.

Keep checking your dogs and yourself if you’re out clearing brush or hiking through the woods this weekend. Lyme disease is no joke, and they’re already starting to show up.

I know it is only halfway through February but this little warm up has been a breath of fresh air!!!! Won’t be long and we will be back to making lawns look amazing.

Love being a business owner in a small town where local businesses look out for each other!

Last week, I had a fertilizer shipment on the way when the delivery truck broke down in Hastings. I needed pallets to transfer the load from their truck to my trailer. Thankfully, Rick at Culligan came through in a big way and helped me out so we could get the job done.
