🐞 Not All Bugs Are Bad! 🐝
When it comes to your garden and landscape, some insects are actually the good guys—working behind the scenes to keep your plants healthy and pests in check.

🌿 Top Beneficial Insects to Know:
🕷️ Spiders – They might give you the creeps, but they’re natural pest controllers! Spiders feed on flies, aphids, mosquitoes, and other annoying bugs.
🐞 Ladybugs – Cute and powerful! Ladybugs eat hundreds of aphids, mites, and scale insects in their lifetime.
🪰 Hoverflies – They look like little bees but don’t sting. Their larvae feast on aphids, while adults help with pollination.
🦟 Lacewings – Their larvae are known as "aphid lions" for a reason—they devour garden pests like a buffet.
🐝 Bees – Obvious, but worth the mention. They’re essential pollinators for flowers, fruits, and veggies. Keep them safe!

💡 Pro Tip: Avoid using harsh pesticides that can wipe out your garden's natural defenders. Planting flowers, herbs, and native plants helps attract these helpful bugs and keeps your garden balanced.

Your landscape is a little ecosystem—let the good bugs do some of the work for you! 🐛🌸

🐝 Let’s Talk About Bees: The Good, The Bad, and the Underground! 🐝

This week alone, we accidentally ran over two ground nests while working—ouch! 😬 It's a harsh reminder that not all bees and wasps are friendly, and many make their homes where you least expect them.

🌼 Beneficial Bees
Honeybees, mason bees, and bumblebees are great for your garden and usually not aggressive. They’re key pollinators and generally mind their own business—so let’s protect these hard workers!

⚠️ Hostile Bees & Wasps
Yellowjackets and other wasps are much more aggressive, especially in late summer. They often build ground nests and won't hesitate to defend them. If you disturb one, you might find out the hard way (like we did).

⛏️ Ground Nest Awareness
Before mowing or trimming tall grass, keep an eye out for buzzing activity or small holes in the ground. If you see a lot of bees or wasps entering and exiting a single spot—don’t ignore it.

🧼 Simple Removal Tip (For Mild Nests Only):
A mix of dish soap and water poured into a ground nest at night (when bees are less active) can suffocate them. Use caution, and only attempt this if the nest is small and clearly visible. When in doubt, call a professional.

Keeping your yard safe doesn’t mean harming all bees—just knowing which ones to leave alone and which ones to remove.

☀️🔥 Yard Care Tips for a Heat Wave 🔥☀️
When the temps climb, your yard feels it too! Here are a few smart tips to help your lawn and plants survive—and even thrive—during a heat wave or hotter-than-usual weather:

🌿 1. Water Early, Not Often
Water in the early morning (before 9 AM) to reduce evaporation and give roots time to absorb moisture. Deep, infrequent watering is better than daily shallow watering.

🌿 2. Mow High
Raise your mower blade! Taller grass shades the soil, holds moisture better, and protects roots from sun stress.

🌿 3. Mulch is Your Friend
Mulch around plants and garden beds helps keep soil cool and moist, and it reduces w**d competition.

🌿 4. Skip the Fertilizer
Avoid fertilizing during extreme heat—this can stress your lawn and burn plants. Wait until temps cool down a bit.

🌿 5. Prioritize Your Plants
Focus water on your most vulnerable plants—young trees, shrubs, or anything recently planted.

Stay cool out there—and let us know if your yard needs a little help weathering the heat! ☀️💧

🌿 Let’s Talk About Laurels! 🌿

Laurels are a popular evergreen shrub used in hedges and privacy screens. Known for their fast growth and dense foliage, they create a lush, green barrier year-round.

✅ Pros:

Grows quickly (up to 2 feet per year!)

Stays green all year

Great for noise and wind reduction

Tolerates pruning well

⚠️ Things to Watch For:

Needs regular trimming to stay neat

Can become invasive if not maintained

Some species (like Cherry Laurel) have toxic leaves and berries—keep pets and kids safe!

A well-kept laurel hedge adds beauty and privacy to your landscape. Just give it some attention, and it’ll do the rest! 💪🌱

🌱 Let’s Talk About One of the Most Overlooked Parts of Landscaping: Soil Health! 🌱

Everyone loves a lush green lawn, vibrant flowers, and tidy garden beds—but did you know the real secret to a healthy landscape lies beneath the surface?

👉 Most landscaping problems start in the soil.
If your plants aren’t thriving or your grass looks tired no matter how much water you give it, chances are the soil needs attention.

🧪 Poor soil can mean:

Compacted ground that chokes roots

Low nutrients that starve your plants

Poor drainage leading to puddles and rot

Wasted time and money on fertilizers that don’t help

Good news? With a little care—like compost, mulch, and soil testing—you can revive tired soil and give your yard the foundation it needs to flourish.

💡 Pro Tip: Every yard is different. What works for your neighbor might not work for you. Knowing your soil is the first step to a healthier, easier-to-maintain landscape.

🌱💦 Want a Lush, Green Lawn This Summer? Here's the Perfect Watering Schedule! 💦🌱

Keeping your lawn green and healthy starts with a good watering routine. Here’s a simple guide to help your grass thrive:

✅ Water Early in the Morning (between 5 AM – 9 AM)
This reduces evaporation and gives your lawn time to absorb moisture before the heat kicks in.

✅ How Often?
2–3 times per week is usually enough. Deep, infrequent watering encourages strong root growth.

✅ How Much?
Aim for 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. You can measure with a rain gauge or a tuna can!

✅ Avoid Evening Watering
Watering late in the day can lead to fungus and disease due to moisture sitting overnight.

🌿 Let’s talk W**D BARRIERS! 🌿
Keeping w**ds out of your garden beds is key to healthy, low-maintenance landscaping. Here's a quick breakdown of the pros & cons of popular options:

👉 W**d Cloth (Landscape Fabric)
✅ Long-lasting, lets water through
❌ W**ds eventually grow on top, hard to remove later

📦 Cardboard
✅ Free, organic, improves soil as it breaks down
❌ Short lifespan, may attract pests if not buried well

🔲 Plastic Sheeting
✅ Blocks all sunlight, great for killing w**ds before planting
❌ Doesn’t let water/air through, can overheat roots

🌱 Pre-Emergent (like Preen)
✅ Prevents new w**d seeds from sprouting
❌ Won’t kill existing w**ds & must be reapplied

💡 Pro Tip: For the best w**d control, try combining methods—cardboard + mulch + Preen can give you a strong, layered defense!

🍃 Let’s talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly of ivy... 🍃
We just tackled a small ivy invasion in a backyard shed — and trust us, it had a little of all three. Check out the before-and-after pics to see what we were up against!

🌿 The GOOD:
✔️ Ivy adds a classic, lush look to walls and fences.
✔️ It provides ground cover in tough-to-grow areas.
✔️ Can reduce soil erosion on slopes and shady spots.

⚠️ The BAD:
🚫 It grows fast — and we mean FAST. If left alone, it quickly takes over.
🚫 It can smother other plants and steal nutrients from your landscape.
🚫 Ivy is hard to control once it gets established — roots dig in deep and cling tight.

💥 The UGLY:
😬 Ivy climbing your house or trees? That’s a big red flag.
It can trap moisture and damage siding, gutters, and even tree bark — leading to rot, pests, or structural issues over time.

That’s where Brandon’s Landscape Maintenance comes in. We cut it back, cleared it out, and gave this space a fresh start. Ivy can be beautiful when managed — but left unchecked, it gets ugly fast.

💪 From Jungle to Just-Right! ✂️🌿
Check out this wild transformation! This property was completely overgrown — we had to mow it FOUR times just to get it under control. 💥 Swipe to see the difference!

Tall grass might seem harmless, but here’s why keeping your lawn trimmed regularly is so important:

✅ Prevents pests – Overgrown lawns are the perfect hiding place for ticks, rodents, and mosquitoes.
✅ Healthier grass – Regular mowing encourages thicker growth and a healthier root system.
✅ Reduces fire risk – Especially during dry months, long grass can be a fire hazard.
✅ Curb appeal matters – Whether you're selling, renting, or just taking pride in your space, a clean-cut yard makes a huge difference.

Sometimes it takes serious effort to get things back on track — but that’s what we do. 👊

🌱 Transformation Tuesday! 🌱
Check out this before-and-after from a recent overseeding job we tackled — with some help from our youngest guest helper yet, 7-year-old Abby! 👧💪 She jumped right in and helped spread seed like a pro. Big thanks to Abby for her awesome work and enthusiasm!

Cool Facts About Overseeding:
✔️ Overseeding helps fill in bare patches, thicken your lawn, and crowd out w**ds.
✔️ It boosts disease resistance and improves drought tolerance.
✔️ Fall and spring are the perfect seasons for overseeding due to cooler temps and higher moisture.
✔️ You can rejuvenate an old lawn without tearing it all out — saving time and money!
💧 Water is key! After overseeding, it’s critical to keep the new seed consistently moist until it germinates and starts to take root. This means light, frequent watering — sometimes twice a day — for the first couple of weeks. If the seed dries out, it won’t sprout!
