On most visits, the first thing we do is walk the outside of the house. We're looking at the foundation line, where the siding meets the sill, gaps around pipes, and anything stacked against the walls. A lot of indoor problems get solved before we ever step inside. Next time you take out the trash, take a lap of your own.

Most of the work that keeps pests out of a home happens where nobody's looking: along the foundation, up at the roofline, behind the water heater. All month, we're pulling back the curtain on what our techs check on a visit, why it matters, and what it tells us about your house.

On Halloween night, keep the storm door latched between knocks when you can. Store the candy in a sealed container, not an open bag in the pantry, and don't leave the bowl out overnight. You're not the only one in the house who likes peanut butter cups.

Tell us: what's the best candy on your street?

Many house spiders already live in your walls and basement. In the fall, the males wander into the open looking for mates. Most of them are harmless. A few sticky traps along the basement baseboards will show you what's moving around down there.

Questions about a spider you found? Ask us in the comments.

Leaf piles against the foundation trap moisture and give pests cover right where they want to get in. Pull mulch back a few inches from the siding too. Once most of the leaves are down, clean the gutters.

Add it to this weekend's yard list.

Cardboard boxes full of fabric and paper decorations make great mouse nests. Before you bring the bins upstairs, look for droppings, shredded material, or chewed corners. Switching to plastic totes with snap-on lids will help before the holiday bins come out.

Save this for decoration day or when you are putting decorations away.

All month, we've pointed you to the same spots our techs check on every fall visit: bulkheads, sill plates, garage doors, utility lines, and the roofline. If you'd rather not crawl behind the oil tank yourself, we'll come take a look and tell you honestly what we see.

Call (413) 566-8222 or send us a message to set up a visit.

Mice love to nest in engine air filters and under hoods, and they'll chew wiring on vehicles that sit all winter. Keep stored vehicles away from cardboard and grass seed, and pop the hood every few weeks.

Share this with the neighbor whose car sits all winter.

We hear this almost every day in October. Mice rarely travel alone. Look for droppings in the back of lower cabinets, shredded paper, and chewed food packaging. If you're finding those, it's worth a closer look.

Not sure what you're seeing? Send us a photo and we'll give you our honest take.

Before you light the woodstove or fireplace, check that the chimney has a cap and that no tree limbs are touching the roof. Overhanging branches are a highway for squirrels. Trimming them now is much easier than evicting a squirrel in January.

Save this for your pre-fire checklist.
