JORO SPIDERS in Tennessee! I've gotten alot of questions about them over several weeks so let's address them now!

Q) Where did they come from?
A) China, India, Korea and other foreign countries. Like everything else, they come from shipping containers mainly.

Q) How big do they get?
A) Females can get as big as 6-8 inches(including legs). Males are about ¼ inches not including legspan

Q) Are they poisonous?
A) Yes, they're poisonous, like most spiders, BUT Joros venom is very weak and doesn't cause serious reactions to humans. They rarely bite humans

Q) Do they make webs?
A) Yes! They are another type of orb weaver and they got their name for making wheel shaped webs

Q) Can they fly?
A) No! They don't have wings but don't be surprised if you see one soaring in the air on a windy day. They have a tactic called "ballooning", where they shoot a thick silk chute that can catch wind and send them airborne.

In mid May this year will be the first time 221 years that two broods of cicadas will emerge (Brood 13 and Brood 19). Brood 13 comes every 17 years and Brood 19 comes every 13 years. For Tennessee, most activity will be in the middle portion of the state but that does not mean you won't see any in west TN. The female lays eggs in trees. Once eggs are hatched, they drop and burrow approximately 8 feet into the ground. Depending on what brood they are in, will depend on how long they stay dormant. Once the soil reaches 64°(approx 8 inches below surface), cicadas will burrow out. The humidity and drought plays a big part in how long they stay around but I only expect them to stay around for about 30-45 days .

The German cockroach is definitely the hardest infestation to exterminate. It takes multiple treatments due to their slow cell division and cell reproduction. They can survive 10,000 rads. In fact, they were found alive and well, 1,000 feet from where the atom bomb was dropped in Hiroshima. They also survived the extinction of the dinosaurs. Now ya know!
