World Soil Day is a focus on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources.

Healthy soils are important for our own health and for a healthy environment. A teaspoon of soil can contain several billion microorganisms. Which goes to show just how full of life our soils have. These microorganisms can help provide nutrient availability to plants, help plants to communicate with one another and even protect them from pests and diseases.

Soils can start to degrade when we change their natural balance within their environment. And if they are managed properly it can help with reduced crop failure and increased yields. Mulching is one good example of helping the soil to retain moisture and improve the overall structure of the soil.

48% of the land in Kenya is agricultural land.

Typically, incoming pressure of unfavorable weather conditions such as drought, locust and armyworm infestations restrain the expansion of farming activities.

With these increasing issues, shouldn't we be focusing on the soil?

Let's talk sh.t weekly facts: Have you ever wondered how the septic system was invented? Well, in 2860 Jean-Louis Mouras decided he'd had enough of walking outside in the night, snow, and rain to do his business, so he decided to create a better way. He combined the Ancient Greece concept of the flush toilet, using clay pipes to transport the wastewater out of his house to a concrete tank, which would hold the wastewater allowing the overflow to make it's way to the cesspool, which was routinely emptied. After 10 years of use Mouras looked inside his tank and was surprised to find the tank nearly empty except for a thin layer of scum. Mouras then enlisted the help of a scientist named Abbe Moigno to help him develop a prototype. In 1881,Mouras patented the Mouras Automatic Scavenger and by 1883 his design had made it to the United States. Americans took this system idea and perfected it.

Let's talk sh.t weekly facts: In the late 19th century, a London plumbing impresario named Thomas Crapper manufactured one of the first widely successful lines of flush toilets. Crapper did not invent the toilet, but he did develop the ballcock, an improved tank-filling mechanism still used in toilets today. Crapper's name would become synonymous with the devices he sold (although the English word "crap" predates him by centuries), thanks in part to American servicemen stationed overseas during World War 1. These doughboys,, unfamiliar with the relatively newfangled invention, referred to the toilets as "crappers" - due to the Crapper brands ubiquity in England and France-and brought the term back home with them after the war. This information was gathered from https://www.history.com/news/who-invented-the-flush-toilet

The modern toilet has equal roots in ancient sanitation practices, Elizabethan politics and Industrial Revolution know-how.
