Most pool service companies are not truly balancing your water correctly.

Yeah, we said it.

At G&H Waterscapes Pool Service, we don’t just test your pool to see if each chemical falls inside a generic “acceptable range.”

We balance using LSI the Langelier Saturation Index.

And that’s a big difference between basic pool service and professional pool care.

A lot of pool companies look at:

✔️ pH
✔️ Alkalinity
✔️ Calcium
✔️ Chlorine

…and if those numbers look “good,” they call it balanced.

That’s not how proper water chemistry works.

Because water chemistry is not about checking boxes.

It’s about whether all of those numbers are working TOGETHER.

That’s why we factor in the full picture, including:

✔️ pH
✔️ Alkalinity
✔️ Calcium
✔️ CYA
✔️ Temperature
✔️ TDS

When water is not balanced properly, it can still be:

❌ Aggressive and damaging plaster/surfaces
OR
❌ Scale-forming and hard on salt cells, heaters, and equipment

So yes, a pool can look clear and still be slowly causing damage.

That’s why we don’t do surface-level testing or the bare minimum.

We take a more educated and calculated approach to protect your:

🚫 Still Doing Hot Starts? Read This Before You Burn Another Pool. 🚫

It might seem like a quick way to knock down plaster dust and make the finish pop, but the National Plasterers Council (NPC) does not support hot startups.

Dropping pH super low on fresh plaster?

That’s not “pro-level” — that’s surface abuse.

It might look good today, but you’re setting that finish up for long-term failure.

🔥 What Is a “Hot Start”?

Also known as a “zero‑alkalinity start” or “acid startup,” a hot start dumps enough acid to drop pH below 4.3, eliminating alkalinity and aggressively etching the surface to burn off plaster dust.

While this may “even out” aggregate exposure cosmetically, it significantly weakens the new plaster, stripping away essential calcium hydroxide before the plaster has fully cured, compromising long‑term integrity.

⚠️ NPC’s Official Start‑Up Guidelines

Their standard 28‑day startup procedure calls for a careful, gradual balancing of pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness while brushing plaster dust and avoiding heaters, chlorine, and mechanical cleaners until the surface cures.

In summary:

Hot starts are deemed aggressive, harmful, and short‑sighted, favored by some for cosmetic speed — but at a heavy cost to finish durability.

If you’re dealing with plaster dust or cosmetic imperfections soon after plastering, it’s far better to follow the NPC standard startup or use controlled acid baths after full cure — rather than risking a hot start.
