Our newest wrapped truck is ready to hit the road.

Every year we help hundreds of families enjoy warm fires with safe chimneys and fireplaces. If yours hasn’t been inspected or cleaned yet, now’s the best time to get on the schedule before the fall rush begins.

One of our CSIA-certified technicians was called to a chimney with reports of discoloration on their masonry and found that the chimney crown was allowing water to enter the chimney due to cracked materials.

After prepping the chimney for repair, it was seen that there was more going on than expected! When our technician looked down the chimney chase, there was rotten wood from years of water entry throughout the whole chimney. This rotting wood was not only a fire hazard to the installed appliance below but also to the heavy stone veneers that were attached!

Here are a few photos of what we found and how our installation team resolved this hazardous problem!

❗️PEOPLE❗️

Please look at your water heater and look at these plastic caps that we have arrows pointed to. If they are melted, it’s a sign that this appliance isn’t venting correctly and could mean there’s a carbon monoxide problem!

We were called out to a house yesterday to see about getting chimneys rebuilt after roofers had torn them down and put a new roof over them under the past homeowners.
The homeowner was showing our technician where his old fireplaces and his current water heater/furnace were in the process, and it was noticed that a gas water heater was venting into one of these chimneys. With a glance at the plastic red and blue rings at the top of the appliance, it was apparent there was a venting issue.

We took the appliance pipe off that goes into the wall and had a couple of gallon's worth of debris fall onto us and found that the chimney was 80% plugged and this water heater was not venting well. After removing this debris, we then ran a camera up the chimney and found that this appliance venting carbon monoxide…was venting straight into the attic of the home! Since the appliance had been off for this process, our tech could climb into the attic and look down the chimney at the video camera.

Now, if you notice these plastic caps are melted, that doesn’t mean your house is filling with carbon monoxide because your chimney is missing. BUT it does mean something’s wrong, and you should have the appliance, and the chimney looked at ASAP.

We always recommend having smoke detectors and digital read out carbon monoxide detectors on each floor.

Cracked flue liners in your chimney are a safety hazard and a liability to your home. When any *one of the terra-cotta liner crack or develop a void, it may not seem like a big issue. However, when heated these voids expand and are allowing the products of combustion to escape your protective system and get behind it which compromises the safety of the chimney system.

These photos are of a chimney that vents a wood burning appliance that was knocked over by recent heavy winds in our area. Look at how much the concrete is stained from the creosote that leaked out!

If you have any questions in regards to this post or your chimney please call our office to talk to a certified technician through the Chimney Safety Institute of America!

We were called to service and inspect this open fireplace in Lakeside Marblehead the other day. The homeowner explained they had just painted the fireplace face, and when they lit a fire, the whole room filled with smoke!

Our CSIA-certified team members discovered that starlings had made a nest inside the chimney, completely plugging their flue!

After determining that no birds or eggs were present, our guys were able to remove the blockage and successfully install a screened chimney cap to prevent this from happening again.

Great job, guys!
