💙 Fun Fact Friday!

People have been battling bedbugs for a VERY long time...

And it turns out, people in the 1800s actually figured out something pretty important about them:

Bedbugs LOVE to hide. 🪳

Housekeeping advice recognized that during the day, bedbugs could disappear into the tiny cracks, holes, joints, and crevices of beds and furniture.

So instead of only cleaning what they could see, people were advised to take beds apart, thoroughly clean those hidden spaces, and even fill cracks with putty so the bugs had fewer places to hide.

Honestly?

Pretty smart. 👏

They had figured out an important part of the problem.

Unfortunately...

then someone brought out the mercury. 😂

An 1860 housekeeping book recommended mixing quicksilver, which is mercury, with egg whites, beating the mixture into a froth, and using a feather to paint it into the cracks and holes of the bedstead. 😳

So they went from:

“Bedbugs hide in tiny cracks. Let's eliminate their hiding places!”

to:

“You know what this bedroom needs? Mercury and eggs.”

VERY quickly. 😂

Needless to say, this particular piece of historical housekeeping advice belongs firmly in the:

🚫 DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME category.

We'll give our Victorian predecessors credit for understanding their enemy...

but maybe not for choosing their weapons. 😂

We have been SO busy over here that I forgot to make this post!

Bluebird will be CLOSED Friday, September 4th through Monday, September 7th to give our birds a much-deserved long weekend! 🤍

During this time, we will not be monitoring calls, texts, or emails. All messages will be responded to when we return to the office on Tuesday, September 8th.

We hope everyone has a safe, relaxing Labor Day weekend! 🇺🇸

💙 One More Thought for Thursday

This morning we talked about creating a home that feels good to live in.

Sometimes, one of the hardest parts of doing that is simply...

letting things go.

Take a minute to really look around one room in your home.

Not at what needs dusting or vacuuming.

Look at the stuff.

The things you haven't used in years. The clothes nobody wears. The toys that have been outgrown. The things you've kept because they're perfectly good, because you might need them someday, or because getting rid of them just feels... hard.

You don't have to clear out half your house in a weekend.

Start with one room. One shelf. Even one bag.

Ask yourself what you actually use, what you genuinely love, and what might be more useful to someone else.

Because every item you let go of is also one less thing to move, organize, dust around, pick up, or find a home for.

And little by little, you may find that your home becomes easier to take care of simply because there's less asking to be taken care of.

Donating isn't just about getting rid of things.

Sometimes it's about making a little more room for the life you're living now. 💙

Marie Kondo once said:

The objective of cleaning is not just to clean, but to feel happiness living within that environment.

And we think there’s something really important in that.

A clean home isn't supposed to be a trophy.

It's not about making every room look untouched or proving that you have everything together.

Your home is supposed to be a place where you live.

Where you rest.
Where your kids play.
Where dinner gets made and laundry piles up and projects get started.

Cleaning is simply one of the ways we care for that space so it can keep taking care of us.

So whether your home is freshly cleaned today or currently covered in evidence that people actually live there...

💙 Another Little Way to Stop the Mess Before It Starts!

This morning we talked about those hidden spaces where crumbs, spills, and mystery gunk somehow collect without anyone noticing. 😂

So here's another simple way to make Future You's life a little easier:

Non-slip refrigerator shelf liners!

These washable liners sit right on your fridge shelves and help catch little spills, drips, crumbs, and sticky messes before they end up all over the shelf itself.

Something leaks?

Instead of taking the whole shelf out and hauling it over to the sink, you can pull out the liner, wash it off, and put it right back. 🙌

And if you choose a non-slip style, they can also help keep jars, bottles, and containers from sliding around every time someone reaches into the fridge.

It's not going to prevent every mess...

Because apparently that container of leftovers with the questionable lid has plans of its own. 😂

But little things that make everyday cleanup easier can make a surprisingly big difference.

Sometimes the best cleaning tricks aren't about cleaning better. They're about giving yourself less to clean. 💙

You move a cabinet, pull out an appliance, or finally look behind that piece of furniture that hasn't moved in three years and suddenly...

WHERE DID ALL OF THIS COME FROM?! 😂

Crumbs.

Dust.

Random little bits of who-knows-what.

And somehow something that looks suspiciously like it may have once been food.

Here’s the thing...

We all have these places in our homes.

Behind cabinets. Under appliances. Beneath furniture. In that tiny gap you can't reach unless you move half the room around.

They're easy to forget because most of the time, we can't even see them.

Out of sight really does become out of mind.

So if you finally move something and discover a little ecosystem developing behind it, don't be embarrassed. 😂

We've cleaned plenty of spaces just like this.

It doesn't mean your house is dirty.

It means you found one of those places your everyday cleaning simply doesn't reach.

And when we're able to safely access those forgotten little spaces while we're cleaning, we're happy to help give them a fresh start, too. 💙

💙 One More Tip for Your Stove!

This morning we talked about keeping crumbs and spills from disappearing beside your stove...

Tonight, let’s keep some of the mess from landing on it in the first place. 😂

If you cook anything that likes to spit, pop, or launch tiny droplets of grease across your kitchen, a simple splatter screen can save you a surprising amount of cleanup.

It sits right over your frying pan, letting steam escape while helping catch those little grease droplets before they decorate your stovetop, backsplash, counters, and everything else within firing range. 🍳

Less splatter means less greasy buildup later.

And just like those stove gap covers from this morning, it’s another example of one of our favorite cleaning strategies:

Sometimes the easiest mess to clean is the one you never made. 💙

Because dinner already comes with dishes.

It doesn’t need to come with a complimentary stovetop deep-clean, too. 😂

💙 Tips & Tricks Tuesday!

You know that tiny gap between your stove and countertop?

The one apparently designed specifically for catching crumbs, grease, noodles, sauce, and that one piece of food you watched fall down there knowing full well you were never seeing it again? 😂

There’s a ridiculously simple solution:

Stove gap covers!

These little strips sit over the space between your stove and counter, stopping food and spills before they disappear down the side.

And this is one we can personally vouch for!

We’ve cleaned quite a few homes that use them, and they make a HUGE difference. 🙌

Not just for us when we’re cleaning, either.

Less food falling into those dark, hard-to-reach spaces means less old food sitting around where you can’t easily see or clean it...

and less food hanging around for unwanted little houseguests to find. 🐜🚫

Sometimes keeping your home cleaner isn’t about cleaning more.

It’s about stopping the mess before it gets there. 💙
