I had a couple of minutes between customers today. So I sat, listened to the music, and put stickers on bags.

It's not glamorous or exciting. But it is calming.

I use a piping bag to fill my tallow balm jars. And usually that's great. But sometimes it leaves air gaps in the bottom. And I don't want my customers to get air pockets. So a quick jiggle helps the product settle. #

When it's time to slice oranges for soap, I like to buy the ones in the unmarked packs on the second chance shelves.

For one, they're cheaper. For two, they come in smaller packs since I only need 4-6 at a time. And for three, it feels better to not buy oranges that someone could eat in their lunch.

Because of this, I am sometimes surprised by what I get. There was no note saying, "blood orange" just one that said, "citrus."

It will be interesting to see how these dehydrate!

Tallow second rendering!

The first rendering happens in the big roaster pan, and the main goal is to get all the connective tissue and large particulates out.

The second rendering happens in a stockpot on the stove a day or two later. The first two bowls are oil that was ladled out from the top and is pretty clean. The third bowl will need an additional melting and straining before it's clean enough for storage or product making.

Sometimes dinner is a complex production with vegetables and silverware and complexity.

And sometimes the BBQ husband is experimenting with new recipes and has commandeered 90% of the counter space. And on nights like this, there's nothing better than a toasted PB&J.

I swear I'm fine. I got in the bathtub and poured a gallon of vinegar on my legs/feet to neutralize the lye, then gallons and gallons of water to dilute what was left.

Qui k reminder if you still want to work with lye: tempered glass is your friend.

ROY G. BIV for the win!

I love making these little tallow balms! And at only $5 each, people love going through them all, finding a scent that vibes with them, and taking home their own little jar of tallow balm.

These are also one of the first things I reach foe when a parent confirms that their child is old enough to smell things without licking.
