A home owner in the Kansas City metro area called after seeing these winged creatures around the window. The fear was, they must be termites. After reassuring the home owner they were ants, the next step was to determine the contributing factor (s). A moisture meter was used to measure the percent moisture wood content, and the reading was 20 %. This is considered high; high enough to create moldy conditions. The ants were treated and the home owner was advised to contact a home repair specialist to investigate and mitigate the source of the moisture infiltration.
Lesson to learn: Sometimes, an ant issue may be an indication of a major problem. Don't just treat the symptoms, investigate the cause.

This is a very important question homeowners face sometimes. A wrong call can lead to thousands of dollars in losses. Two things are worthy of note when it comes to subterranean termites. They eat the soft part of the wood and leave the hard part. This results in strips of hard parts of wood lined up like sheets of paper. They also bring up dirt from the soil and line it between the sheets of hard word (see picture B) When in doubt, always seek the services of a licensed termite professional.

EcoPest Services, LLC is a family-owned and locally based business located in Grandview, Missouri. Over the past several weeks, we have fielded calls from irate home owners complaining about getting unsolicited sales pitches at late hours of the evenings. One caller described the sales person as a young man wearing a cap with a shield logo.

We have never, do not, and don't plan on engaging in door-to-door sales! Our logo has NO shield
Sorry for the inconvenience this practice has come to bear on some of you. EcoPest is not the company conducting those practices.

Why are ants difficult to control?

Ants are social insects that live in colonies. This team work has made them very resilient and successful. With Spring here, it’s time to prepare for them.
But why are they so hard to get rid of?
1.Some ant species have multiple nest sites and multiple queens. Therefore, an improper identification of the ant species can lead to control failures.
2. Their nest(s) may be located in hard to reach places inside and/or outside the structure.
At any given time, only about 10 % of the colony may be out foraging. The common mistake made by home owners is to spray the foraging workers. This practice leaves behind hundreds, if not thousands, of ants in the nest; ready to re-infest. Ants nesting indoors pose the greatest challenge. Their nest(s) may be hidden in hard to reach places like door and window frames, behind walls, beneath cabinets, beneath slabs, etc.
Ant control can be achieved using liquid, dust and/or bait products. It is important to note that their food preference is based on the needs of the colony. Therefore, a bait that may have worked well at one time, may not be as effective at a different time. As a result, it’s important to try different bait types to see what works.
