Ellie is always so excited to see us on our weekly visits! 🧡 We’re pretty sure she’d rather spend the whole time getting belly rubs than watching us scoop. 🐾

What Every Pet Owner Should Know
As smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to drift across Michigan and neighboring states, many of us notice hazy skies, the smell of smoke, burning eyes, or an irritated throat. What many people don't realize is that our dogs are breathing that same air—and it can affect them just as much, if not more.
Wildfire smoke contains tiny particles known as PM2.5, along with gases and other pollutants. These microscopic particles can travel deep into your dog's lungs, causing irritation and inflammation of the respiratory system.
Even healthy dogs may experience discomfort, while puppies, senior dogs, brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds, and dogs with heart or lung disease are especially vulnerable.

Watch for:
Coughing or frequent throat clearing
Sneezing
Wheezing or noisy breathing
Increased panting, even while resting
Nasal discharge
Red, watery eyes
Lethargy or reluctance to exercise
Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
Loss of appetite
If your dog has existing respiratory problems, symptoms may worsen more quickly.

When air quality is poor:
🐾 Keep walks short or avoid them and avoid strenuous exercise.
🐾 Stay indoors as much as possible, especially during the hottest part of the day when smoke concentrations can increase.
🐾 Keep windows and doors closed.
🐾 Run your air conditioner on recirculate if available.
🐾 Consider using a HEPA air purifier in rooms where your pets spend the most time.
🐾 Make sure fresh drinking water is always available, as smoke can dry the airways and increase the need for hydration.
🐾 Avoid exposing your dog to additional irritants such as cigarette smoke, campfires, candles, or aerosol sprays.
Check the Air Before You Head Outside
Before taking your dog for a walk, check your local Air Quality Index (AQI).
0–50: Good for outdoor activities.
51–100: Generally acceptable, but sensitive dogs may need shorter outings.
101–150: Limit outdoor activity, especially for at-risk pets.
151 and above: Keep pets indoors whenever possible.
Dogs can't tell us when the air hurts to breathe—but they depend on us to recognize the signs.
If the sky looks hazy or you can smell smoke, it's a good reminder to slow down, stay indoors when possible, and give your four-legged family members a little extra protection. A few simple precautions today can help prevent serious respiratory problems tomorrow. Be safe out there.
