YELLOW ALGEA ANYONE???

Yellow algae—also called mustard algae—is a type of algae that grows in swimming pools and is yellow-green to mustard brown in color. It’s different from the more common green algae in a few key ways:

🔍 What is Yellow Algae?

Scientific name: Xanthophyceae (a group of algae)
Appearance: Dusty, powdery, or slimy yellow/mustard-colored patches, often in shady areas of the pool (like corners, steps, or behind ladders).

Texture: Often brushes off easily but comes back quickly if not treated thoroughly.

Resistance: Very chlorine-resistant. It forms a protective layer (biofilm) that makes it harder to kill than green algae.

🧪 Why It’s a Problem

It clings to surfaces and hides in pool equipment, plumbing, and cracks.

It can survive even after brushing and normal chlorination.
Left untreated, it can spread and make the pool unsafe and uninviting.

✅ How to Treat Yellow Algae

Here’s what typically works (and what you might do as the pool service pro):

Brush it thoroughly – especially in shaded and low-circulation areas.

Superchlorinate/Shock – Use a high dose of chlorine shock, ideally a calcium hypochlorite-based one.
Add an algaecide – A mustard or yellow-specific algaecide works better than general ones.
Run the filter continuously for at least 24 hours.
Clean all accessories – Floats, brushes, poles, and even bathing suits can hold spores. Encourage the customer to wash these.
Vacuum and backwash after treatment.

💡 Pro Tip for Your Customer

Let your customer know: "This type of algae is stubborn and can come back if not treated aggressively the first time. But with the right combo of brushing, shock, and algaecide, we can knock it out and keep your pool crystal clear."

Why Pump Setup Matters More Than the Brand

I recently had a customer ask me to install a new pump. He ended up purchasing a budget pump from Walmart, saying, “Haywards aren't worth the money—they only last a year or two.”

But the moment I looked at his setup, I knew exactly why even a top-tier pump like the Hayward Super Pump wouldn’t last long in that system.

Here’s the issue:

From the pool to the front of the pump, there wasn’t a single straight run of pipe. Instead, the water had to travel through three 90-degree elbows before even reaching the pump. That setup makes it extremely difficult for any pump to operate efficiently.

When a pump has to pull water through multiple sharp turns before it even reaches the impeller, it’s under constant stress. Add to that the resistance of pushing the water through a sand filter on the other end, and the pump is essentially working double-time—day in, day out.

The result? Premature motor failure, overheating, loud operation, and reduced lifespan—no matter the brand.

The takeaway:

You can spend less on the pump, but if the plumbing isn’t right, you're going to keep spending—on replacements, power bills, and possibly worse filtration performance.

If you want a pump to last, give it a chance to breathe:

*One straight pipe (minimum 10x the pipe diameter) leading into the pump
*Minimal 90-degree turns
*Proper alignment and support
A quality pump with poor plumbing will always perform worse than a budget pump with a proper setup—but ideally, you want both right.

Algae doesn’t stand a chance when your pool is properly maintained. Here’s why the 3 C’s matter:

🔁 Circulation – Stagnant water is algae’s best friend. Keep your pump and filter running efficiently to move water and prevent buildup in “dead spots.”

🧹 Cleaning – Skim, brush, and vacuum regularly! Algae loves to cling to walls and hide in corners. Stay on top of cleaning to disrupt its growth.

🧪 Chemistry – Test and balance your water! Proper sanitizer levels (like chlorine), pH, and alkalinity help kill algae spores before they can take hold.

✅ Consistent maintenance = Clear, healthy, algae-free water all season long. Your pool (and your swimsuit) will thank you!
