That filter looks pretty gunked up, and cleaning it is key to keeping your dishwasher running right. The filter traps food particles, grease, and debris so they don’t recirculate onto your dishes or clog the spray arms. If you let it get clogged like the one in the photo, a few things can happen:

1. *Poor cleaning performance* – dishes come out spotty or still have food bits.
2. *Bad odors* – trapped residue can cause the dishwasher to smell funky.
3. *Water drainage issues* – blockage can lead to water pooling or slow draining, which may damage the pump over time.
4. *Increased energy use* – the machine has to work harder, raising your utility bills.

Regularly cleaning the filter (usually once a month or every few weeks depending on use) keeps water flowing freely, ensures dishes get properly cleaned, and extends the life of your dishwasher.
