The large bees you see hovering in your face and "dive-bombing" you are the males. They are extremely territorial and will zip toward anything that moves to drive it away. However, male carpenter bees don’t even have a stinger. It’s all a big game of bluff!

The females do have a stinger, but they are incredibly docile and spend almost all their time inside the wood galleries they’ve drilled.
