Compacted soil makes it harder for a lawn to get what it needs.

Core aeration removes small plugs of soil throughout the lawn. Those openings help relieve compaction and allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone more effectively.

The plugs left behind are a normal part of the process. They gradually break down and return organic material to the soil.

Why do we talk so much about seeding in the fall?

The soil is still warm enough to help grass seed germinate, while the cooler air is more favorable for new grass growth. That gives young grass time to begin establishing before winter and provides a head start when spring arrives.

Bagworms are one of those pests that get worse the longer they’re ignored.

They start small, hide well, and feed as they grow. Once damage shows up on your trees or shrubs, especially evergreens, it may take time to recover—and some damage may be permanent.

This is why it’s important to pay attention when you first notice hanging bags, browning branches, or thinning foliage.

Bagworms leave clues.

Watch for:
Small cone-shaped bags hanging from branches
Browning or thinning on evergreens
Branches that look stripped or patchy
Bags that look like dried plant material stuck to the tree

They are often found on evergreens, but they can show up on other trees and shrubs too. The sooner you notice them, the better.

Their bags are made from bits of needles, leaves, and plant material. That means they can look like part of the tree instead of a pest problem.

Many homeowners don’t notice them until the bags get larger or until the plant starts showing stress. By then, the bagworms have already been feeding.

Take a slow look at your evergreens, shrubs, and ornamentals. If something looks like little hanging pinecones or debris, it may be bagworms.

As bagworms grow, they eat foliage from the plant they’re living on. On evergreens, that can be a serious problem because the damage may not grow back the way homeowners expect.

They start small, blend into trees and shrubs, and carry little protective “bags” made from pieces of the plant they’re feeding on. By the time most people notice them hanging from branches, they may have already been eating for a while.

Bagworms are especially hard on evergreens, ornamental trees, and shrubs. If you’re seeing small cone-shaped bags hanging from your plants, it’s worth taking a closer look.

𝗕𝗮𝗴𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀.
They hatch small, begin feeding, and build protective bags around themselves as they grow. Those bags make them harder to notice and harder to deal with as the season goes on.

As they mature, they continue feeding on the plant while staying tucked inside that protective covering. Later, the females can leave behind eggs inside the bags, starting the cycle over again for next year.

If you’re seeing bagworms now, don’t ignore them.

Happy Birthday to Justin, our termite inspection specialist and professional crawl space disappearing act.

Most days, this is the only view we get of him while he’s out making sure homes are protected from termites. If anyone happens to spot the other half of Justin today, please post a picture so we know he made it back out.

All jokes aside, we’re thankful for his hard work, attention to detail, and willingness to crawl into places the rest of us would rather not discuss.
