A year ago, I had a chance encounter that I never expected would turn into business.
I was out on a walk when a dog got loose and started running toward a busy street. I was able to help get the dog out of harm’s way, and an employee from a local chimney company named Colton stopped to help me secure him before he could get back into traffic.
We only talked for a few minutes afterward. He was friendly, helpful, and gave me his business card.
Then life moved on.
A year or so later, when it was time to have our chimney cleaned, I decided to try a different company Mid-Valley Chimneys & Masonry after using the same one for years.
I still had that interaction in the back of my mind.
When I called to make the appointment, they asked how I had heard about them. I told them the story and joked that, in summary, it was basically a chance encounter with one of their employees.
Then today, the person who showed up to clean our chimney looked familiar.
I asked, “Were you the guy I met that day with the dog?”
It was Colton.
And he even remembered details from the encounter.
It was a good reminder that you never really know where business can come from.
Sometimes it isn’t a sales pitch, an ad, or a carefully planned networking event.
Sometimes it’s simply being helpful, friendly, and leaving a good impression when there’s absolutely no expectation of getting anything in return.
A small interaction today might turn into an opportunity a year from now.
