Today, on Steve Irwin's birthday, we celebrate wildlife everywhere — including in your backyard.

YOU DON'T NEED TO GO TO AFRICA TO SEE AMAZING WILDLIFE.
Look outside.

YOUR BACKYARD WILDLIFE IS:

🐿️ SQUIRRELS
- Remember 10,000+ nut locations
- Plant more trees than any organization
- Brain literally GROWS in fall for memory

🔴 CARDINALS
- Mate for life
- Feed each other seeds (even when they don't need to)
- Males grow brighter red with better nutrition

🦉 OWLS
- Incubate eggs in below-zero temps
- Hunt by sound, can catch prey in total darkness
- Neck rotates 270 degrees

🦨 SKUNKS
- Eat entire yellowjacket nests
- Natural lawn grub control
- Spray is last resort, not first

🦝 RACCOONS
- Remember solutions for 3+ years
- Paw sensitivity rivals human fingertips
- Can learn complex tasks

TODAY'S CHALLENGE:
Go outside. Watch one animal for 5 minutes.
Really watch.

Your backyard is a nature documentary waiting to happen.
You just have to pay attention.

Sometimes love stinks... literally! 🦨❤️

The breeding season for striped and spotted skunks occurs in February, leading to an increase in skunk activity and sightings. You're likely to smell them, too! Male skunks spray their rivals while females spray males they're not interested in mating with.

Both of Kentucky's skunk species typically have one litter per year in the spring. Striped skunks are abundant throughout the state while spotted skunks are considered rare with a much smaller distribution.

Spotted skunks are classified as Species of Greatest Conservation Need within Kentucky's State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP), which summarizes the status of our state's more vulnerable wildlife species and the condition of the habitat on which they depend.

As spring fever hits and snow melts away, critters go absolutely bonkers with activity, kicking off a super fun season of fluffy squirrels nesting, raccoons getting mischievous, skunks being stinky, and groundhogs getting chunky, all leading to the adorably chaotic arrival of spring's tiny troublemakers. We love watching wildlife frolic in spring, but honestly, they're kinda terrible roommates - always making a mess. If you've got unwanted critter roomies, give us a call and we'll happily help you evict them.

Anyone else excited for the warmer weather starting next week? We definitely are at Jenson's Wildlife Management.
Just a reminder that if you're excited, then the animals are too - they've been hunkered down through the cold and snow trying to stay warm!
Please feel free to message or call us day or night; we strive on excellence and are prepared to help if wildlife wanders too close to home.
