Can we talk about how ✨AMAZING✨ bats are?

The body of a bat is a novelty, starting with the fact that bats are the ONLY flying mammal on earth. A bat’s wings are actually modified hands. Just like humans, bats have four fingers and a thumb on each hand. In bats, their skin helps form the wings that enable them to fly. Bats even have tails that are connected to skin membranes between their hind legs

Bats in Indiana are insectivorous, meaning they eat bugs. One of their best-known hunting methods is echolocation, which allows them to locate insects in flight while avoiding obstacles!

Bats can eat up to 50 percent of their body weight in insects making them prime pest control. The Little Brown Bat can eat around 1,200 insects per hour and the Big Brown Bat can eat between 3,000-7,000 insects per night! Bats are responsible for keeping our pest populations low; and our forests, farms and neighborhoods healthier.

In short, there are more to these critters than what we give them credit for. They are amazing creatures with an important role in human society and the natural community.

Batman may lurk in the shadows of Gotham, but little bats like this lurk in the shadows of Indy. And they're so much cuter.

Are you seeing bats in places you don't normally see them? During this time of year, bats in Indiana are transitioning from their summer roosts to their winter roost locations. During the transition, they seek temporary places to sleep and often make their selections based on convenience. These bats may only be a few months old and are on their own for the first time, so they make some odd choices.

If you see a bat hanging in an unusual spot, it's not necessarily in trouble. It may even stay for a few days while it figures things out. Just give it plenty of space and take the moment to appreciate these incredible little mammals!
