The importance of a fireplace and chimney sweep and inspection is often overlooked. Chimneys and fireplaces should by inspected and swept on an annual basis for optimal performance, annual maintenance, and removal of dangerous creosote deposits. Creosote deposits can build up over time, and if left, can become a major fire risk. A recent inspection revealed this customer had a recent flue fire due to accumulated creosote deposits over several years. Customer heard a load roaring noise, followed by flames coming out the top of the chimney. The expanded, lighter color of the creosote is a dead giveaway of a flue fire. A flue fire is a extremely dangerous situation with a high possibility of spreading to the house and becoming a structure fire. This customer was lucky there was no additional spread or damage to the home.

Chase covers can be a major point of entry for water leaking into a chimney. Water entry into an chimney will cause significant damage if left unresolved. Water will absorb into brick and mortar, breaking down the structural integrity of the chimney. Water will seep down a factory built metal pipe, rusting the pipe and fireplace itself, taking years off its lifespan. Standing water on chase covers will eventually find its way into the system causing irreversible damage. A proper stainless steel chase cover with added cross breaks and a properly secured storm collar will keep the inside of the chimney dry, preserving the life of the fireplace.
