❄️ What’s an Ice Dam (and why should you care)? ❄️

An ice dam forms when heat from your home melts snow on the roof, that water refreezes at the edges, and ice builds up. The problem? That ice traps water, which can sneak under shingles and cause leaks, ceiling damage, mold, and rot 😬

🛠 What to do if you have one now:

Use a roof rake to remove snow near the eaves (from the ground—no climbing!)

Melt drainage channels with calcium chloride (not rock salt)

Never chip ice with tools—you can damage your roof

🏠 How to prevent ice dams long-term:

Improve attic insulation

Air-seal gaps around lights, vents, and attic hatches

Make sure your attic has proper ventilation

Install ice & water shield during reroofing

Heat cables = last resort (they treat the symptom, not the cause)

A large, high-impact winter storm is expected to move through the region from Friday through Monday, bringing heavy snow, significant ice accumulation, and dangerously cold temperatures. There is a potential for widespread power outages due to ice and snow loading on trees and power lines.

Forecasts indicate the potential for significant snowfall totals across a wide area, potentially approaching 2 feet. This system is expected to be disruptive and long-lasting, with conditions evolving through the weekend and lingering cold into early next week.
