🦨 The Skunk: "YOU FEAR MY SCENT. YOU SHOULD FEAR WHAT I EAT."
I AM THE NEIGHBORHOOD BOMB SQUAD.

"You run when you see me because you're afraid of a bad smell. But while you sleep, I am hunting the things that actually send you to the hospital. I am the only mammal in your backyard brave enough to dig up a hornet's nest and eat it like popcorn. I tolerate the stings so your children don't have to. I am not a nuisance; I am high-risk pest control working the night shift."

šŸ“° FIELD REPORT: The Yellow Jacket Destroyer
Angle: Immunity through evolution.

[BIOLOGICAL EVALUATION] The skunk is one of the few predators that actively seeks out ground-nesting wasps (Yellow Jackets) and hornets.

The Technique: Skunks scratch at the entrance of a hive to agitate the insects. As the guard wasps fly out to attack, the skunk catches them in mid-air or crushes them as they exit. Once the defenders are depleted, the skunk digs up the comb to eat the high-protein larvae.

The Armor: Skunks have incredibly thick fur and tough skin that renders them largely immune to stings. A nest that would send a human to the ER is just a spicy dinner for a skunk.

THE UNSHOWN SIDES OF "PEPE LE PEW"
1. The "Ammo" Shortage (Why they don't want to spray)
The Biological Cost: Skunks are not trigger-happy. Their spray is a sulfur-based chemical weapon that is metabolically "expensive" to produce. They only carry enough for 5 or 6 sprays, and it takes up to 10 days to reload their glands.

The Warning: If a skunk sprays you, it’s because it thought it was going to die. Before they spray, they will stomp their feet, hiss, and even do a handstand (if it's a Spotted Skunk) to warn you. Spraying is a failure of diplomacy.

2. The Lawn Doctor
The Grub Hunter: If you see small, cone-shaped holes in your lawn in October, don't be mad. The skunk is digging for Japanese Beetle grubs. These grubs eat grass roots and kill your lawn from below. The skunk is performing free aeration and grub control. A few small holes are better than dead turf.

3. The Rabies Reality Check
The Statistics: While skunks can carry rabies, the "frothing aggressive skunk" is rare. Most healthy skunks are near-sighted, docile, and slow. They waddle. If you leave them alone, they are essentially harmless pacifists.

THE MANIFESTO: "MUTUAL RESPECT"
"I won't spray if you don't startle."
The Deal: The skunk wants to eat the bugs you hate (roaches, crickets, wasps, mice). All it asks for in return is personal space.

The Olfactory Myth: A skunk passing through your yard does not smell. They only smell when they discharge. If you smell skunk, something (a dog, a car, a predator) attacked them.

šŸ¤ Our Duty: The "Speak Up" Protocol
How to coexist without the tomato juice bath.

The Action: Announce Your Presence.

The Vision Problem: Skunks have terrible eyesight. They can barely see 10 feet in front of them. If you walk out silently to take out the trash, you startle them.

Talk to the Night: Before you let the dog out or step onto the patio, speak out loud or clap your hands gently. "Hey skunk, I'm coming out."

The Retreat: If they hear you coming, they will waddle away. They don't want a confrontation. They just want the Yellow Jackets.

The next time you see that white stripe in the moonlight, don't panic. Just nod respectfully. He’s on his way to disable a landmine of stinging insects that was waiting for your lawnmower.

Raccoon Mating Season: Potential Of A Delayed Start Due to Cold Weather

January and February have been colder than recent previous years in southern Ontario, which could push the raccoon mating season back a bit until warmer temperatures arrive. Typically, raccoons could be actively seeking mates by now, but the chilly weather might have delayed their amorous pursuits.

When male raccoons do become amorous, they will relentlessly pursue females until they are willing to mate. This process can take a few weeks, and during this time, the females can become quite agitated by the male’s advances. They may lash out with teeth and claws, and let out loud, unsettling screams of disapproval. These sounds can be so loud and disturbing that some people have reported being startled awake, thinking someone was being hurt.

Despite injuries sustained during the pursuit of love, male raccoons are driven to procreate and will mate with multiple females during the breeding season. And once baby raccoons are born, you might start hearing chittering noises coming from your attic. These sounds are made when the baby raccoons feel bothered or hungry, and are often described as multiple birds chirping at once.

Female raccoons give birth to 1 to 7 babies about 62 days after mating. So, if the mating season is delayed due to cold weather, you can expect to see baby raccoons being born later than previous years, possibly in late March or early April.

Wildlife Rescue Center thank you for this great post...
And for letting folks know we are available for assistance as needed.

It is true, we can safely get wildlife and their young out of undesired areas, without traps at all..and then address the primary issues- the entry points!

After all, you don't have a wildlife issue, you have an entry point issue.
As a note- we are seeing baby squirrels now and soon baby raccoons and other baby wildlife.
We strongly discourage the use of traps to 'solve' wildlife issues and concerns.

Also, prior to closing the hole, be sure wildlife are out of the area of concern.
Commonly, we hear of people and companies which close or wildlife proof an area, only to soon find out young and/or adults were present.

Happy Holidays,
Staff at Humane Wildlife Solutions LLC

Now is the perfect time to inspect your home for potential wildlife entry points. With careful observation and preventive maintenance, you can address most issues before they arise!🐾

āœ…Check your roof, eaves, siding, vents, and similar areas for damage or weathering.
āœ…Cover any openings with heavy-gauge wire.
āœ…Ensure your chimney is safely and securely capped.
āœ…Install L-shaped heavy-gauge wire barriers around decks, sheds, and patios to prevent digging or burrowing. Be sure to leave an ā€œescape hatchā€ until you’re sure no critters are already inside.
āœ…Install wire fencing at least 24ā€ above the ground with an ā€œapronā€ buried 2ā€ into your garden soil to deter non-climbing animals.
āœ…Trim tree branches that provide easy access to your roof.
āœ…Remove or reduce outside food sources like pet food, birdseed, and unsecured garbage, especially at night.

Need help with preventative maintenance or resolving a wildlife conflict? We recommend our friends at Humane Wildlife Solutions llc, St. Louis’ only 100% humane wildlife control service provider.

DEER RESCUE FROM IRON FENCE (Full video). NOTE- PLEASE DO NOT ATTMPET THIS ON YOUR OWN!
Please share this post.

Humane Wildlife Solutions LLC Employees:
Dee, Ethan, and Garry helped rescue a deer caught inside a black iron fence.
Luckily, the fence owner reached out as soon as the deer was discovered.

The doe had been in the fence for a little while and her leg(s) had fallen asleep. She ran off into the forest a few minutes after shaking off the pins and needles.

Any time an animal is present and in distress, it is extremely important to use caution around them.
In fact, a wildlife trained individual is strongly recommended and often required to safely address the issue at hand - for human and the wildlife safety.

These fences provide a nice look for the yard but unfortunately, they also negatively impact deer and other wildlife in many ways. Some are impaled by the top of the fence as they attempt to jump over. Deer also get caught in the bars and other sections of the fence (as demonstrated in this video).
(...and yes, the fence was repaired by HWSllc prior to leaving the site.)

Great ways to proactively prevent these issues:
- Change out to a different style fence or remove the fence
- Add screening or other material to the face of the fence to ensure they do not attempt to pass through the bars
- Add a rope or string along the top of the fence with small ribbons or cloth- which will blow in the wind and alert deer to the potential hazard
- And more--- Call us for more insight and services to make sure this does not happen on your property.

Raccoons In The City vs. Country: How Environment Shapes Behavior

Raccoons are found in both urban and rural areas, and they are known for their adaptability and mischievous behavior. However, there are some key differences between urban and rural raccoons.

Here are some of the main differences between urban and rural raccoons:

- Urban raccoons are adapted to living in the city, and they are able to survive and thrive in a variety of environments. They can be found in parks, green spaces, and even in residential areas, and they are known for their ability to adapt to urban environments.

- Rural raccoons are adapted to living in natural environments, such as forests, wetlands, and fields. They are able to survive and thrive in these environments, and they are known for their ability to adapt to rural environments.

- Urban raccoons have a wider range of food sources than rural raccoons, and they are known for their opportunistic eating habits. They will eat just about anything, and they are known for raiding trash cans, eating pet food, and even stealing food from outdoor kitchens and grills.

- Rural raccoons have a more limited range of food sources than urban raccoons, and they are more reliant on natural sources of food. They are known for eating fruits, nuts, and insects, and they are also known for raiding bird feeders and chicken coops.

- Urban raccoons face different challenges than rural raccoons, and they are more likely to encounter human-related threats, such as traffic, pollution, and disease. Rural raccoons are more likely to face natural threats, such as predators and harsh weather conditions.
