One bed bug can lay up to five eggs per day. By the time you see f***l staining on a mattress seam — the dark spotting that shows up in the folds and stitching of bedding — there is already an established population in the room.

Bed bugs don't stay in the mattress. Within weeks they move into box springs, headboards, baseboards, outlet covers, and the seams of furniture within five to ten feet of where a person sleeps.

A wasp nest in August is not the same problem as a wasp nest in May.

Yellow jacket colonies grow through the entire summer. A queen starts the season with a few dozen workers. By late summer, an active colony holds between 1,500 and 15,000 wasps depending on species and location. Nests built inside wall voids, attic spaces, and eaves can exceed the size of a basketball before most homeowners notice them.

Yellow jackets become significantly more aggressive in late summer as food sources decline and the colony protects its remaining resources. Attempting removal without professional equipment at that stage is how people end up in the emergency room.

Ants along your foundation are not a surface problem.

When you see ant activity at the base of your home's exterior, there's already a colony close by using your foundation as a highway into the structure. Pavement ants, the most common foundation-nesting species in the Pacific Northwest, build colonies of up to 5,000 workers directly beneath concrete slabs and along foundation edges. They enter through cracks as small as 1/16 of an inch.

Most ant infestations that appear inside a home have their colony outside or underneath it — often in the crawlspace.

Carpenter ants, the most common structural pest in the Pacific Northwest, don't eat wood. They excavate it to build nesting galleries. A mature carpenter ant colony can hold 3,000 workers, and satellite colonies split off to establish new nests nearby. A rat doesn't need much to get inside your building. A gap the size of a quarter is enough. And the trash room is where they start.
