are ticks on the rise

+8
Tick populations are increasing in Michigan | WKAR Public MediaTick populations are surging across the U.S., particularly in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Upper Midwest, leading to increased tick-borne diseases. Driven by climate change, milder winters, and expanding habitats, these pests are thriving in urban and suburban areas. Key factors include rising deer/rodent populations, reforestation, and habitat fragmentation.

Key Reasons for Tick Population Growth
Climate Change: Warmer temperatures, higher humidity, and shorter winters allow ticks to survive, stay active longer, and expand into northern regions.
Host Availability: Rising white-tailed deer populations provide critical, consistent food sources for adult tick reproduction.
Habitat Changes: Suburban development and reforestation create "edge habitats" that support higher populations of host animals like white-footed mice, which are major carriers of Lyme bacteria.
Invasive Plants: Some invasive plants (e.g., Japanese barberry) create ideal, humid microclimates for tick survival and shelter rodents.

Impact on Public Health
Increased Disease: Tick-borne diseases, such as Lyme disease, have more than doubled in the U.S. over the past two decades.
Expanded Geography: Black-legged (deer) ticks are rapidly expanding their range into new areas, including parts of Canada.
Seasonality Shift: Tick-related emergency department visits have increased, with significant surges observed in early summer.

Protection and Prevention
Tick Checks: Perform thorough body checks after being outdoors, particularly in woody or brushy areas.
Repellents: Use EPA-registered insect repellents (such as those containing DEET or picaridin).
Landscaping: Create a barrier between wooded areas and lawns, and remove leaf litter to reduce habitat.

Though we typically become aware of ticks when they’ve found a host (us, our dogs, cats, people etc.), they commonly spend the bulk of their lives in the environment and not on the host. Some species actually prefer to feed on different hosts, not just one. So the time we actually see ticks is incredibly small. They’re spending most of their time in areas that have the high likelihood of yielding a variety of hosts while also protecting them from the sun, often in wooded areas with brush and vegetation. These areas will be shady with access to small mammals (and often large ones). Ticks are usually close to the ground and climb up vegetation where the host inadvertently brushes against them. Though species may prefer slightly different habitats, they tend to thrive in less-maintained environments. Since they prefer forest and bushy areas, the best way to reduce their numbers is to keep a well-maintained outdoor area by removing leaf litter and brush, pruning shrubs, keeping wooded areas separate from lawns, and minimizing the amount of shady areas where we would most likely find ticks. To supplement these efforts, chemical control has a place in tick management, ideally applying in the areas where ticks are most likely to be found. CJB pest recommends you getting your yards sprayed for ticks in order to keep your family safe.
