🏠 I’ve seen a lot of New Year’s resolutions to get homes in order. As the owner of a cleaning business, here is my unsolicited advice:
🛌 just buy new pillows. Get rid of that floppy brown one you’ve had since your college freshman Target trip. Talalay latex pillows are hypoallergenic, don’t hold onto bacteria, and keep their shape. Worth the investment.
🧼 You don’t need 1,000 tubs of Tree Hut sugar scrub in your shower. Store them elsewhere and take it into the shower with you when you’re ready. And all those empty bottles gotta go. They’re just holding water and setting up mold.
(Other areas that often need delcluttering: linen closet, coat closet, junk drawer, tops of dressers, silverware drawer, under sinks)
👟 Deep clean your floors in the new year then stop wearing shoes in your house. Especially if you have toddlers/crawlers. Imagine everything you walk through on the daily and you’re just tracking that into your house, into your bed, onto your sofa. If you have outdoor pets, get some pet wipes and wipe their feeties off when they come back in.
🆒 Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures etc at leeeast once a month. Wash your bedding weekly. Wipe down your sinks and countertops after you use them (just takes a second!)
⬆️ and while we’re at it, invest in an air purifier rated for the size of your space. It’ll cut down on allergens and dust in your air and keep away bad odors from pet dander, cat boxes, sweaty shoes etc. It’ll cut down on dust massively. I keep mine close to the laundry because of the drier lint.
🛀 Keep drier vents cleaned out to keep it running smoothly. Keep bathroom fans dusted and don’t run it constantly. Massive fire hazard.
🛍️ if you don’t know where you’re going to put it when you get home, don’t buy it. Also if the first 20 Starbucks/Stanley/Yeti cups haven’t fixed your life and dehydration then one more isn’t going to help.
😴 set up a closing shift. I know you’re tired and life is busy, but set aside time to empty your kitchen sink, put away that laundry, pick up toys or anything else in the floor. Then set yourself up in the morning. Lay out your outfit, your coffee cup, pack your lunch.
🆘 It’s okay to ask for help! Have a friend hang out with you while you clean/organize to keep you motivated. Or, if you can afford it, hire a cleaner or organizer! If you feel like you can’t, look at your budget to see if you could cut down in other areas to budget in a cleaner. (Some ideas- cut down on phone bill, eat out less often, skip a TJ Max candle-sniffing and blanket-petting excursion. I’m so guilty of this 🙋🏻♀️)
If you can set aside ≈ $6 a day, you can likely fit in a monthly cleaning!
