1. Vacuum more than you think you need to.
Most people vacuum once a week. Carpet pros recommend twice a week in high-traffic areas — and if you have pets or kids, make it every other day. Dirt is abrasive. Every step grinds it deeper into the fiber. The vacuum is your first line of defense. Use it.

2. Stop using store-bought spot cleaners.
We know. The bottle says "professional strength." It is not professional strength. We got a call on a Tuesday morning. The voice on the other end was... let's say, spirited.

"The house closes on Friday. We just pulled up the area rug. I don't know what happened under there but it looks like the dog lived his entire emotional life on that carpet and we cannot sell this house like this PLEASE HELP."

We've heard this call before. We'll hear it again.
