Does this sign look familiar? Do you know what it means when you drive through this area?
This is a Safety Corridor sign. Safety corridors are stretches of state highways where fatal and serious injury traffic crash rates are higher than the statewide average for similar types of roadways. To reduce the number of these incidents, a stretch of the road can be designated as a "safety corridor". It then becomes subject to heightened enforcement and double fines for traffic infractions. Drivers may also be asked to turn on headlights during the day, reduce speed and refrain from passing.
The OR Route 140 Safety Corridor is near the Lake of the Wood from milepost 29 to 47. This 18-mile stretch of highway in Jackson County has been a designated safety corridor since 2005. To get a safety corridor designation, a highway must have a serious injury crash rate at least 110 percent above the state average.
Now you know for the next time you are driving and see a Safety Corridor sign.
