MYTH VS. FACT SERIES โ Termites
MYTH: If you do not see termites, your home does not have a termite problem.
FACT: Termites are often hidden. Subterranean termites usually live underground and travel through mud tubes, crawlspaces, foundation cracks, wall voids, and other concealed areas. By the time a homeowner sees visible termite damage, the colony may have already been active for months or even years.
Termites feed on cellulose materials such as wood, paper, cardboard, and some building materials. Homes along the Crystal Coast, including Emerald Isle and Cape Carteret, can be especially vulnerable because moisture, crawlspaces, wood debris, and warm coastal conditions can create ideal termite activity.
A clean, well-kept home can still have termites. Termites are not attracted to dirt; they are attracted to moisture, wood, and access points into the structure.
Helpful Tip: Check around your foundation, crawlspace, porch columns, garage, and plumbing areas for mud tubes, soft wood, blistered paint, or moisture problems. Keep firewood away from the house and make sure water drains away from the foundation.
