Want to save money, protect your water, and extend the life of your septic system? Here are some important DOs ✅ and DON’Ts ❌ to follow:

DO:
• Limit water use – fix leaks & spread out laundry
• Pump/inspect your tank every 3 years (more often with garbage disposals)
• Keep rain & surface water away from your drainfield
• If buying a home, ask for service records & have the system checked

DON’T:
• Don’t connect sump pumps, water softeners, or “clean water” discharges to the tank
• Don’t flush grease, coffee grounds, paper towels, diapers, or other clogging materials
• Don’t pour old meds, oils, paints, pesticides, or harsh cleaners down the drain
• Don’t use septic “cleaners” or “starters” – they can harm your system
• Don’t plant water-seeking trees or shrubs near your drainfield

Following these simple tips helps keep your system healthy, prevents costly repairs, and protects our lakes & groundwater.

Your septic system’s drainfield is major part of your system!

Also called the soil absorption field, seepage cell, mound, or dry well, this area is where wastewater from your septic tank is treated and dispersed into the ground. When properly installed and cared for, your drainfield can last for years — but only if you give it the attention it needs!

Here’s how to protect it ⬇️

1️⃣ Spread out water use – Don’t overload your system. Do laundry over several days instead of all at once.
2️⃣ Maintain your septic tank – Make sure sludge & scum never escape into the drainfield. Regular inspections keep things flowing.
3️⃣ Check pumps – Some systems release wastewater in controlled doses. Ask your plumber how to make sure yours is working right.
4️⃣ Protect the soil – Your drainfield soil acts as a filter. Keep cars, buildings, heavy equipment, and even animals off it.
5️⃣ Redirect water – Keep rain, snowmelt, and downspouts away. Never pile winter snow on the drainfield.

A healthy drainfield = cleaner water, a longer-lasting septic system, and fewer costly repairs!

Your septic tank needs regular maintenance to stay healthy!

If sludge and scum build up, they can clog your outlet pipe and even damage your drainfield leading to costly repairs. That’s why pumping and inspections are so important!

How often should you pump?

- Most tanks need service every 3 years
- Frequency depends on family size, water use, garbage disposal use & tank capacity 🏡
- Many counties even send reminder cards so you don’t forget!

⚠️ Remember: Never enter a septic tank. The gasses inside can be deadly - leave inspections and pumping to the professionals.

At Associates Septic Services, our trained team is here to help you protect your system and avoid expensive failures. Trust us to keep your septic tank flowing smoothly year after year! 🙌🚛
