Happy Halloween from Backwoods!

Between trips to the candy bowl, take a quick look at whether your front door closes fully and whether the sweep sits flush at the bottom. If you notice a gap or repeated pest activity later, take a photo of the area and look at the whole entryway before assuming one opening explains everything.

A quick observation can give you a useful starting point for a proper inspection. Have a fun and safe evening, neighbors.

Before and after from the same exterior inspection. The first photo shows a vertical gap where siding trim meets the foundation. The second shows exclusion material placed in that opening.

A repair photo is useful because you can compare the exact same spot. It does not prove every possible opening was found or that activity inside has stopped. We look at the whole exterior, the evidence and how the building is put together before recommending next steps.

Swipe to compare the change. Have you looked closely at the narrow seams where siding meets concrete or other materials?

Here’s a closer look at a preserved yellow jacket specimen. This one had been in alcohol for capture and preservation, which is why its color and body can look different from a live yellow jacket.

We keep specimens like this so we can study their markings and body details more closely. Those details help when we’re sorting out what someone found and deciding what to inspect next.

This is a Backwoods study specimen, not a current nest, and we are not making a species-level identification from this image alone. If you notice repeated yellow-jacket traffic near a doorway, yard area or structure, watch where they are coming and going from a safe distance. Please do not disturb an active nest to get a picture.

Cold weather can send mice looking for shelter, but the first gap you notice isn’t always the one they’re using.

This Backwoods field photo shows an opening around utility lines—one of the places we check during an inspection. We also look for droppings, gnaw marks and other evidence, then connect what we find outside with the activity inside.

That inspection-first approach helps us focus exclusion work on likely entry routes instead of simply sealing random gaps.
