Edmiston Family Story: The ancestors of the name Edmiston lived among the Boernician of the Scottish/English Borderlands in the medieval era. Members of the Edmiston family settled in Scotland, just following the Norman Conquest of England, in 1066. The earliest Edmiston settlers to the United States arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Virginia in the year 1740. Th

e Edmiston motto is “Virtus auget honorem”, which translated means “Virtue increases honour”. From 1740 until 1865, the Edmiston ancestors migrated from the east coast to central Texas. In Coryell County, Texas, the Edmiston ranching legacy began as we know it. In the mid-1870s, the migration continued to Mason County, Texas, and finally landed in Schleicher County, Texas. Family Ranching Legacy: Upon arriving in Coryell County, Texas, in 1865, Mr. Newton James Edmiston filed for a land grant from the State of Texas and was granted 160 acres near modern day Copperas Cove, Texas. He and his wife, Sara Louisa Sterling Edmiston, purchased cattle from her father with the brand of “SIS” on them; which was her personal brand that stood for “sis” (or sister), her family nickname. The “SIS” cattle brand is the holy grail livestock brand within the Newton James Edmiston family descendants. The SIS brand is still being used by a 7th generation family member in the central Texas region. Hood, Texas. Hood Lands document, Newton James is listed as a “cattlemen with substantial herds in the vicinity of Cowhouse Creek”. Rambouillet Flock History: While the Edmiston family is rooted in cattle ranching since the mid-1860s, the Rambouillet sheep arrived in the family around 1910, with William Frank Edmiston (son of Newton James) in Schleicher County, Texas. The existence of the Edmistons as sheep men was prevalent by having their own shearing crew made up of William Frank’s 6 sons, with Eugene Newt Edmiston (3rd son) as the “el capitan” (or “the captain”). Eugene Newt Edmiston (3rd generation Texas rancher) developed his own ranching legacy by purchasing and leasing numerous ranches in Schleicher County, Texas, during his lifetime. At the height of his ranching, he and his sons had a total of 350 Hereford cattle, 3,500 head of Rambouillet sheep, and 1,000 head of Spanish goats. Eugene Newt (known as “Gene”) was well known and honored amongst the West Texas ranching community for the quality of his livestock. Gene Edmiston Rambouillet Flock: Gene Edmiston (aka, “Little Gene”), a grandson of Eugene Newt (“Gene”), is a 5th generation Texas rancher, who focus’ only on his Rambouillet flock on one of the ranches acquired by his grandfather. All livestock are grass-fed, no antibiotic, no hormones, and no pesticides raised in a large, open pasture with minimum handling to reduce animal stress. While many of the ranching practices his grandfather taught him are still in use, Little Gene has made some modern improvements to optimize the ranching operations. Continuing with the Edmiston ranching legacy, Little Gene and his 16 year old son perform all of the ranching operations by themselves, with little outside help. Schleicher Rambouillet Fleeces: West Texas is known in the American sheep industry as having some of the best quality fleeces in the USA; with Schleicher County, Texas, being at the heart of Texas sheep country. The Edmiston family has gone to great lengths to produce the best quality fleece product, given the dry, arid conditions of the ranch land. Mr. Edmiston’s Rambouillet flock produces fine wool, next-to-skin fibers with an average fiber diameter in the 18 and 19 microns, 3”-3.5” staple length, 50% yield, low vegetable matter (VM), 99+% comfort factor, and lightly skirted. None of the animals have been coated (aka, blanketed) during any time of the year. While it has been honor to the Edmiston family to provide fleeces for the US military clothing for many years, Gene Edmiston has decided to offer his fleeces to the spinner and fiber arts community. Fleece Characteristics: Each fleece has it’s own quality and characteristics that make them unique. With all of the Schleicher Rambouillet fleeces grading as next-to-skin quality, the uses are endless using weaving, knitting, crocheting, and felting techniques. After scouring (washing) and carding, the roving fibers look like a wonderful ball of soft clouds. The light cream color is typical for West Texas Rambouillet sheep and provides the most diverse and accommodating color to coordinate with all other colors. The Rambouillet fibers do a wonderful job of accepting all colors of natural dyes. The color palette is endless, while solids and blends each glow with a radiance of the full spectrum. Lamb Retail Meat: With the Rambouillet breed being a dual-purpose animal, the producer has the opportunity to maximize his profits by selling both the wool and lamb offspring. While the Rambouillet lambs don’t typically grow as fast as other single-purpose breeds, the quality of the meat is rich in flavor and matures to a well marbled muscle providing a complete carcass of meat that is perfectly balanced in size, appearance, and taste. Edmiston is offering his lamb cuts directly to the public consumer once the lambs get to an optimum weight and body condition to obtain the most ideal slaughter animal.

Sometimes, things don't go as planned!

Today didn't go as planned. The New Mexico sheep I bought for genetic research didn't get on the road until almost noon central time...2 hours late!

I made it to Goldthwaite TX, about 30 minutes ahead of schedule to intercept the sheep to deliver to the university. I filled up with gas and ate a Subway sandwich. I got to the auction barn on time, and heard from the trucker that he was going to be an additional 30 minutes to an hour late.

He arrived an hour late. Then, the lambs just weren't cooperating in the dark. I crawled up in the trailer and helped get the lambs out, basically one by one. It took an hour and 45 minutes to finally get everything unloaded...lambs, goats, and older ewes.

Then, it was decision time...10:45 pm. Either:

1. Wait until the truck moved out of the way, load the ewes in my trailer, and get on the road around 11:30 pm, to arrive at the university at 3 am, or

2. Leave the ewes in the auction pens overnight, grab a motel room, and load up first thing in the morning.

I chose option #2. Then, the first motel was fully booked. I drove through town and found a second one and they had vacancy. I got lucky because this little town only has 1,100 people.

Hopefully, I'll be asleep by midnight! Nighty Night Y'all!

A Wooly Mess!

Yesterday, I had to clean out one of my trailers so I can haul sheep today to one of my customers. The wool had gotten wet multiple times and turned out to be a stinking (literally) mess.

I should be able to salvage most of the fleeces. But, about 25 or so were too moldy and wet to mess with.

I got it done after about 3 hours and took the trailer for a spin before it got dark. Floor looks good, tires look good, and all of the lights work.

Yesterday was meat delivery day!

I delivered a 1/4 beef to a cousin in Midland and then back to the processor to get the other 1/4 to bring to my freezer. Check out my old handy freezer for meat hauling. It's hauled several thousand pounds over the past 30 years.

I had the processor bag me up some bones and fat. I'm going to cook some bone marrow and try to make some tallow. These will be new adventures for me.

I also have the liver, heart, and sweetbreads available, if anyone is interested. My brother took the tongue with the other half of the calf.

If you ever have a need to split a half (meaning each one gets a 1/4) with someone, check out the sheet I use to determine who gets what. My cousin wanted more roasts and less steaks. I wanted the opposite. So, you can see how I split it all up.

And lastly, I picked up 20 lbs of homemade sausage at a german catholic church fall festival. I had to package it myself...so, ziplocks for the win!
