Mopping a floor with grit on it does two things.

It turns the dirt into mud and spreads it into a thin film across the whole floor. And it drags that grit under the mop head, which is basically sandpaper on your finish.

The floor looks worse when it dries and you cannot figure out why. That is why.

Vacuum. Then mop. Always in that order.

The 15 minute reset

You do not need to clean the house. You need to reset it.

Set a timer for 15 minutes. One room. No perfectionism allowed.

- Everything that does not live in this room goes in a laundry basket by the door
- Flat surfaces get cleared and wiped
- Trash out
- Floor gets vacuumed
- Timer goes off, you stop

The basket gets emptied on your way through the house later. The trick is you never leave the room you are working in, because leaving the room is how you end up reorganizing the garage at 11pm.

One room a day. By Friday the house is clean and you never once spent a Saturday on it.

We like vinegar. It handles soap scum, it cuts light mineral film, it is cheap and it does not stink up the house for an hour.

Here is where it fails: real hard water buildup. That white chalk that will not budge on your shower door or your faucet base. Vinegar is a weak acid. Hard water scale that has been building for two years does not care.

That job needs a real descaler. CLR, Lime-A-Way, Bar Keepers Friend. Something with a stronger acid in it.

We are not going to pretend otherwise. Some jobs need the chemical. The trick is knowing which ones, so you are not huffing bleach to clean a countertop that needed soap and water.

Also: never use vinegar on natural stone. Granite, marble, travertine. The acid etches it. That damage does not come out.

Stainless steel has a grain

Look close at your fridge door. You will see faint lines running one direction. That is the grain, same as wood.

Wipe with the grain and it looks clean. Wipe in circles and you leave a swirl of micro streaks that catch light from every angle.

Damp microfiber with the grain. Dry microfiber with the grain. That is it. No spray polish required. The polish just puts an oil film down that grabs fingerprints faster.
