I found this to be true as well. Often times in my Air Force career, I'd ask question after question after question so I could understand what I was being told.
It served a several purposes for me.
First, it helped me truly understand complex things.
Second, it taught the people that worked for me that I cared about what they were saying and that they needed to have a complete understanding of the situation or topic as well.
Third, it prepared me to brief my bosses if I needed to. The better I understood it, the better I could simplify it for busy leaders and explain the consequences or impacts in ways that were meaningful to the leaders and helpful for the organization.
