***It is officially Raccoon breeding season in Michigan!!***
Raccoons are starting to find and/or return to previous spots they have nested in.
Here is a little timeline of their breeding tendencies:
January:
Nesting season is in full swing. Females are looking for and finding secure spots to have young. Those locations commonly include attics and chimneys. They will also return to the same nesting locations year after year.
February:
Peak breeding. Males search out nesting females so these locations can see a lot of traffic and different raccon activity.
March:
Breeding season continues, bred females have roughly a 60 day gestation period, some early bred females start to have babies. Removal of the pregnant females before this time is ideal.
April/May:
Chattering and squeaking from babies is commonly heard by homeowners as they are mostly born by this time. Each circumstance is unique, but a common call we get is people who trap out female raccoons leaving their young inside in extremely remote and hard to find spots in attics. If mom is trapped, the babies will die unless removed and that task can be extremely difficult. In most situations the babies will not survive even with rescue care and feeding. It is best to leave mom and the babies be until the babies have the power to walk out on their own.
