Another chimney rebuilt from just above the shoulders — and this one means a little more.
Dalton and Jordan joined in on building the chimney this time, and honestly, watching them work was the best part of the week. It wasn’t an easy job — the top of the stack was in rough shape and water had been sneaking in all the way down to the attic. Learning bricklaying isn’t easy, and it can be frustrating when you’re first starting out.

But these guys just kept showing up. Asking questions, taking pride in every brick they set, getting a little sharper every single day. You can see it in the finished work, and in the way they stepped back and took in what they helped build.

There’s nothing like watching your own brothers grow into real craftsmen. I’m proud of you boys. Onto the next chimney!

Scary Chimney Saturday 👀

A quick reminder about two things we see often in old homes:

Unlined chimneys and surface “repairs” like silicone.

An unlined chimney allows heat, moisture, and flue gases to come into direct contact with the masonry. Over time, this leads to:
• Accelerated deterioration
• Creosote absorption into the brickwork
• Increased risk of flue gas leakage into the home, including carbon monoxide

Chimneys should be equipped with clay flue tiles or another UL-listed liner system to properly contain and vent combustion byproducts.

Then we often see attempts to “fix” the exterior with silicone.

Here’s the problem:
Silicone does not repair masonry—and it’s not breathable.

Instead of allowing moisture to escape, it traps water inside the chimney, which:
• Accelerates up brick and mortar breakdown
• Worsens freeze/thaw damage
• Pushes deterioration deeper into the structure

What looks like a quick fix from the outside can actually make the problem worse.

Proper chimney systems are designed to vent through a liner to vent toxic flue gases and manage moisture correctly—not seal it in.

We arrived today to check on a water leak… and discovered a collapsed clay flue liner inside the chimney amongst other concerns 😳 We never know what we are going to find!

During recent assessments, we’ve been finding a noticeable increase in glazed creosote buildup inside chimney systems. Glazed creosote forms when unburned hydrocarbons in the smoke condense and harden on the flue walls. It often develops under conditions such as:

- Burning green or unseasoned wood

- Long, low‑temperature or smoldering burns

- Appliances run on low settings

- Restricted airflow from a partially closed damper, dirty cap, or draft issues

-A flue that is not appropriately sized for the appliance

- Chimneys exposed to cold outdoor temperatures, especially exterior structures

With the current cold weather, many homeowners are burning hotter and more frequently. If glazed creosote is already present, these hotter burns can ignite it and lead to a dangerous chimney fire.

Because glazed creosote often forms deep within the system, it cannot always be identified during a basic visual check. That’s why a thorough inspection — including a full camera evaluation of the flue interior — is essential. A camera inspection allows us to see the areas homeowners can’t and identify conditions that would otherwise go unnoticed.

We could barely fit our arms around this liner! This 16” round fireplace liner had a 54” circumference and is our largest liner install to date. The install was physically demanding but our customer will undoubtedly reap the benefits of having a new chimney from the attic up, a properly sized liner and parged smoke chamber to vent their fireplace this coming heating season. There will be more photos to come once we wrap the entire project up!

These photos were taken during a Level 3 chimney inspection in a home built in 1830. Homes built in the 19th and early 20th centuries often contain construction methods and materials that predate modern safety codes & standards. These hidden defects often go unnoticed for decades. In this case, it does look like repairs were made to the walls but the charred joists were left in place and the defective smoke chamber was never corrected.

Level 3 chimney inspections allow us to access concealed areas and uncover issues that may not be visible during standard evaluations, helping homeowners make informed decisions about repairs and long-term structural planning.

Findings like this are a stark reminder of why modern building codes and safety standards exist today.
