What’s removed from your gear matters just as much as how it’s removed.

Traditional water washing can push contaminants into wastewater systems, extending the risk beyond the fireground. With a closed-loop process, contaminants are captured and contained rather than discharged - helping deliver cleaner gear for firefighters while also reducing harmful runoff that can impact the environment and surrounding communities.

Cleaner gear for your crew shouldn’t come at the public's expense. Read more in our blog on toxic runoff and city water safety:

The cost of turnout gear does not stop at the initial purchase.

From inspections and repairs to decontamination and replacement cycles, firefighter PPE represents a major long-term investment for departments. Our latest blog breaks down what impacts turnout gear costs, how maintenance affects longevity, and what departments should consider when planning for the full lifecycle of their gear.

Cutting corners on gear cleaning doesn’t save money; it shifts the cost down the line.

Proper decontamination isn’t just about safety; it’s a long-term financial decision. From extending the life of turnout gear to reducing replacement frequency, the right approach helps departments protect both their crews and their budgets.

Traditional water washing may seem cost-effective upfront, but over time it can accelerate wear and tear on gear, leading to more frequent repairs and earlier replacement - ultimately costing departments more.

We’re proud to partner with the National Volunteer Fire Council to help bring more attention to an issue that continues to impact firefighters across the country - long-term exposure to harmful contaminants.

Firefighters face risks that extend well beyond the fireground, and increasing awareness around proper gear decontamination is a critical step in helping reduce those exposures.

Through this partnership, we look forward to supporting educational conversations, sharing resources, and collaborating on future webinars focused on firefighter health and safety.

Lithium-ion battery fires aren’t just different: they’re more complex and more toxic.

New research shows these fires release a mix of hazardous gases, heavy metals, and carcinogenic compounds that extend beyond the initial incident. And the risk doesn’t end when the fire is out. Contaminants remain on gear, equipment, and in the environment.

As EV incidents increase, so does firefighter exposure. The fireground is evolving. The way we protect firefighters has to evolve with it.

“Clean” isn’t just a visual standard - it’s a measurable outcome.

Incomplete decontamination can leave behind PFAS and other harmful contaminants that remain embedded in turnout gear. Over time, that means continued exposure with every wear cycle.

Departments need to move beyond how gear looks and focus on what is actually being removed - and what isn’t.

We are on the ground at FDIC this week with Emergency Technical Decon, connecting with leaders across the fire service and diving into the conversations that matter most: from smarter, more connected operations to firefighter health and contamination risks.

If you’re here, let’s connect!

Having real conversations that create real impact.

Our VP of Sales continues to share how departments are thinking about contamination, what challenges they’re facing, and where decontamination practices need to evolve. From PFAS exposure to wastewater runoff, the risks don’t stop at the fireground. And neither should the solution.

At Emergency Technical Decon, we’re focused on advancing how departments approach gear cleaning - protecting your crew, your station, and your community.
