Spots That Germs LOVE!

Illnesses can be spread on the common surfaces in your home, such as kitchen counters, dining tables, faucet handles, light switches, door k***s, etc. Here are some tips to help keep you from falling victim to colds, flu and other nasty bugs.

1. KEYBOARD – Unplug your key board and hold it over the garbage can and give it a good but gentle shake to remove crumbs and dust that may have accumulated between the keys, then wipe it down with a lightly damp disinfecting wipe and dry with a paper towel.
2. CHAIR ARMS – This spot is often overlooked but is in frequent contact with your hands and arms. Use a disinfecting wipe or paper towels sprayed lightly with a disinfectant spray to clean the arms of your chairs.
3. COMPUTER MOUSE – Unplug your mouse and wipe the surface with a damp disinfecting wipe. Dry thoroughly.
4. LIGHT SWITCHES – Wipe with a damp disinfecting cloth.
5. KITCHEN and BATHROOM FAUCETS – Wipe with a disinfecting wipe and then dry.
6. MICROWAVE and REFRIGERATOR DOOR HANDLES – Another great breeding ground for germs! Use paper towels sprayed with a disinfecting spray and wipe dry.
7. DOORKNOBS – Grab a disinfecting wipe and wipe the k**b or handle on both sides of the door.
8. KITCHEN SPONGES and DISHRAGS – Bacteria clings to sponges and dishrags. Sponges can be effectively cleaned by running them through a dishwasher cycle and dishrags by rinsing in water and a half teaspoon of bleach. Let them dry between uses.

NOTE: You do not have to use a disinfecting wipe, paper towels and disinfecting spray are just as effective.

Did you know that old toothpaste in your toothbrush bristles can harbor bacteria? Pretty gross huh? That statement alone makes me want to throw out my toothbrush every time I use it!

Here are a few tips on the everyday use and handling of your toothbrush:

1. DON’T SHARE! This can increase your risk for infections.
2. APPLY TOOTHPASTE CAREFULLY – When you dispense your toothpaste, don’t touch the tip of the toothpaste tube to your toothbrush. This helps to avoid the transfer of bacteria from your brush to the tube.
3. RINSE WELL – After brushing, rinse your toothbrush thoroughly with water to ensure the removal of toothpaste and debris.
4. STORE UPRIGHT – Store your toothbrush in an upright position and allow it to air dry. If stored with other toothbrushes, keep the brushing ends separated.
5. STORE IN THE OPEN – Don’t routinely cover toothbrushes or store them in closed containers. Such conditions are more conducive to bacterial growth than leaving out in the open air.
6. REPLACE – From time to time toothbrushes just need to be replaced.

Nine Pretty Nifty Uses for Old Toothbrushes
1. Clean a can opener blade
2. Remove baked on food from toaster wires and racks
3. Clean jewelry
4. Clean garlic out of your garlic press
5. Brush stain treatments into fabrics before laundering
6. Gently scour around the base of bathroom and kitchen faucets
7. Clean your contact lens case
8. Lift dust and debris from sliding-door tracks
9. Clean rinds and cheese from a hand grater.

Anyone else have any other nifty ways they use an old toothbrush?

Cleaning Products You Should NEVER Mix!

These cleaners are common (and helpful to have around), but the wrong combo can be quite dangerous. When you're faced with a tough cleaning job, it's easy to get frustrated — and tempting to get creative with how you combat it. But before you reach for every cleaning product under your sink and start playing chemist, please just don't. "People often think that if one product works, mixing it with another one will make it even better," says Carolyn Forte, director of the Cleaning Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute. But here's the scary truth: "Certain products, which are safe when used alone, can sometimes cause unsafe fumes or other chemical reactions when mixed with other products," says Nancy Bock, Senior VP of Education at the American Cleaning Institute. And even if your ad-hoc cleaner combo isn't dangerous or toxic, you can never be sure what effect two products can have on a surface or fabric when combined. Always read the warning and ingredient labels on cleaning products — and never mix these:

1. Drain cleaner + drain cleaner -"I would never recommend mixing two different drain cleaners or even using one right after the other," says Forte. "These are powerful formulas, and could even explode if combined." Use one product according to package directions (typically, only half a bottle is needed per treatment). If it doesn't work, don't try another product. Instead, call a plumber, Forte says.

2. Baking soda + vinegar - We're calling you out, Pinterest: Although these pantry staples are handy on their own (both baking soda and vinegar can help clean all over the house), skip any DIY cleaner recipe that involves this not-so-dynamic duo. "Baking soda is basic and vinegar is acidic," says Bock, "When you put them together you get mostly water and sodium acetate. But really, just mostly water." Plus, vinegar causes baking soda to foam up; if stored in a closed container, the mixture can explode.

3. Bleach + vinegar - The combination sounds like it'd be a powerful disinfectant, but the two should never be mixed. "Together, they produce chlorine gas, which even at low levels, can cause coughing, breathing problems, and burning, watery eyes," says Forte.

4. Bleach + ammonia - Bleach and ammonia produces a toxic gas called chloramine. "It causes the same symptoms as bleach and vinegar — along with shortness of breath and chest pain." says Forte. Many glass and window cleaners contain ammonia, so never mix those with bleach.

5. Bleach + rubbing alcohol - Perhaps you've heard of chloroform? You know, the stuff kidnappers in the movies put on rags to knock out their victims? Although it might not actually make you pass out, this combination can be irritating and toxic. Make it a rule to never mix bleach with anything but plain water. "Even other products like window and toilet bowl cleaner can have ingredients, like acids or ammonia, that shouldn't be mixed with bleach," says Forte.
