Flying Ants or Termites?

April and early May is the time termite colonies send out new Kings and Queens to start new colonies. Most species of ants in Southeast Mo. don’t do this until late May or June. If you are seeing these around or in your home now you probably have a termite colony nearby. Termites colonies normally take 3 to 5 years to reach a size large enough to produce these swarmers and have many thousands of workers consuming wood to support them. Termites cause between 3 and 5 billion dollars worth of damage every year in the United States. Don’t let your home be one of them!

Don’t let the bedbugs bite (or come home with you)! 5 tips to avoid bringing these pests home with you when you travel.

1) Inspect the bed for signs of an infestation as soon as you check in. Pull back the fitted sheet and look for f***l spots ( looks like black ink dots) or live bed bugs around the seams.

2) NEVER put you clothes in the dresser or leave them laying on the bed. Keep them in your luggage until you are ready to wear them (bedbugs are attracted to the “smell” of perspiration left on our clothes).

3) Don’t use the luggage bench or the bed to hold your bags and luggage when you leave for a day of fun. Instead put your items in the tub when not using it. Bedbugs are rarely found in the bathroom and don’t like to crawl across tile and porcelain.

4) Don’t bring in your favorite pillow (I know, I want mine when I travel). If you must, take off the case and inspect before heading home.

5) When arriving home, take your bags straight to the laundry room and throw all clothes (clean or worn) into your dryer and run it for 30 min on normal heat. This will kill any bedbugs that managed to hitch a ride and after this cycle you are safe to put your clothes into the dirty clothes basket. Mist your luggage with an spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol taking care to get in the seams and pockets.
