Detroit Water and Sewerage Department This is the official page of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. DWSD continues to retain ownership of the regional assets.

Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) is one of the largest water and sewer utilities in the United States, serving more than 200,000 Detroit residential and commercial accounts that includes a city population of nearly 680,000. DWSD’s water network consists of more than 2,700 miles of transmission and distribution mains and nearly 3,000 miles of sewer collection piping. On January 1, 2016,

the City of Detroit began leasing regional water and sewer infrastructure, as well as water and wastewater treatment facilities, to the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA). The regional system built by DWSD, serves 126 municipalities in seven southeast Michigan counties. The agreement between DWSD and GLWA includes a $50 million annual lease payment for 40 years to replace and rehabilitate DWSD’s aging water and sewer system. DWSD has a rich history as a public utility dating back to 1836. Today, DWSD focuses on serving the residential households, businesses, non-profits, faith-based organizations and other account holders that rely on water and sewer services within the city of Detroit.

Over the weekend, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department participated in Motor City Makeover, a citywide cleanup and beautification initiative. This year, employees from the department were in the North Corktown neighborhood in District 6. The neighborhood clean-up included planting trees and flowers, weeding garden beds and park areas, removing trash and debris, and mulching.

It’s Infrastructure Week—and we’re shining a light on the systems you don’t always see, but rely on every day! From the pipes beneath your streets to the hydrants that promote public safety, our water and sewer infrastructure keeps our community flowing safely and sustainably.

This week, we recognize the essential work of maintaining, upgrading, and investing in the systems that support our homes, businesses, and future growth. Because strong infrastructure isn’t just behind the scenes—it’s the foundation of a thriving community.

Dan from our stormwater team joined the Friends of Rouge Park and the Renaissance High School Environmental Club to explore green stormwater infrastructure (GS) in action!

The group visited the DWSD Far West Stormwater Improvement Project in Rouge Park, which helps reduce basement backups, street flooding, and combined sewer overflows (CSOs) by redirecting stormwater to the Rouge River rather than entering our sewer system. We also visited a controlled burn area, where prescribed fires are used to clear invasive species and encourage the growth of deep-rooted native plants that improve soil drainage.

Thanks to the Friends of Rouge Park & Renaissance HS for joining us!
